The Person Who Changed My Life
The Person Who Changed My Life
I walked down the corridor, trying to blend in with the crowd unable to chatter like them as I walked down my corridor. It wasn’t that I had no friends, but I was too shy to open my mouth and speak. But then she walked in and said hello and made each and every one of us at home, on our first day of school. She introduced herself as Tasneem Ma’am and I loved her from the minute I set my eyes on her. She wanted to make each one of us share our thoughts, but I couldn’t. I just couldn’t. I was too shy to answer in class. I was the person who hid behind my mother when someone asked me my name. Speaking up in class in front of 30 students? Forget it. But as usual she would tell me that I could do it, and her eyes always said whatever you say, I will always be proud of you. She worked her magic on me through her soothing words, her appealing expressions and her enthralling smile.i Day by day I improved, my shyness took a while to disappear but eventually like how a bud blossoms into a flower, I blossomed into the person who was no longer afraid to accept who she was, but ready to take on new challenges that life offered. I really don’t know where I would have been without her, and I sincerely hope she’ll be proud of me when she sees how far I’ve come with her help.

Ms. Anna taught me how to persevere in her classroom. How to weigh as little as possible, shrinking to a point where there was no more of me to give. Showing me how to expose the hills of my ribs, deep valleys between each bone, deserts of famished flesh. She taught me how to drop my grades in my other classes and how to strive in hers. She stole my eagerness for reading books; books that left me engrossed, absorbed almost in a trance. Books that transported me to another reality. She took that eagerness and snuffed it out with a pillow leaving it breathless, snuffed out like a lost flame - like…

Three years ago, I came into a world full of dreams, but these dreams can take you down if you don’t pay good attention. I am the first born in my family. Before I came here, I was so afraid to come to a new country, which I didn’t know any thing about. I was somehow confused, and the biggest fear that I had was about adapting to a new culture. Although I didn’t know anyone, all the people I met welcomed me, and I really appreciated the welcome. The school counselor called one of the students and told him to show me my classes. As a child, I had always been very quiet and very reserved. My mom always said that I barely cried and was always particularly calm. When I was in the 3rd grade, I often struggled in math class and was too shy to ever ask for help. I was given news that I was to attend summer school and that it would determine if I would move on to the 4th grade. In summer school, I also struggled and even though I knew I wasn’t understanding the concepts I remained silent. I received a call saying that I had failed and was at risk of repeating the grade. Luckily for me, my mother and counselor advocated on my behalf and I was given a second chance. Now you may be wondering so what? Well, this experience served as an eye opener for me and marked the day that…

Have you ever met someone who changed your life forever? I have. When I first started as an undergraduate, I had no desire to study biology. At that time, most biology-associated classes I experienced were in a typical lecture setting. While they were relatively easy for me, they were not exciting nor did they motive me to learn more. Biological science, for me, was simply something theoretical and too far away from real life. However, my ‘Evolution’ and ‘Animal Behavior’ professors completely changed my ideas. Both of them were enthusiastic teachers who included all kinds of activities in classes. For example, after watching ‘Eight Legged Freaks,’ a creature-feature involving giant spiders, we discussed physiological constraints for the…

I heard that people can't change. I don't think it's true, because I changed all thanks to my best friend Lulu. Before meeting her I was the opposite as I am right now, unhelpful, not that good at my studies and even not that good as someone to trust. Not only did Lulu change my way of thinking she changed my life, within three different reasons, her honesty, her cleverness and her volunteering works. She is a very close to me, although I met Lulu in my first year at the university. The first time I saw Lulu I didn't think much of her, there is a saying that looks can be deceiving. Questions passed through my mind: Is she going to be a good influence on me or not? Are we going to like each other? I started talking to Lulu and introducing myself to her as she did too, little by little I began to really like her personality.…
