In the novel The Pigman, Paul Zindel expresses his recipe for a happy life. He is able to achieve this through two teenagers learning about life and an old man who is able to teach the kids. They can’t be told what paths to go on in life because they have their own choices to make, and nobody else can make them. Zindel particularly used John because his dad always told him to be a rich businessman. John would rather be an actor because he felt like it would be the best thing for him to do in life. From the Pigman’s insights, John learns life wouldn’t be about money. Even though the money would be nice, it’s more about enjoying the job that you have. “To @#$% with Kenneth. To @#$% with marching along, with an attaché case swinging in the breeze.” (161) The rich businessman John’s dad tried to get JOhn to do would be like John’s older brother, Kenneth, who works on Wall Street. John doesn’t think he would be able to do the job because he doesn’t care about school and isn’t that smart. John liked to smoke a lot and drink beer, which showed he doesn’t care about his life. John tried to get across to his father that he wanted to choose his own path in life because if he became a businessman, then he would feel as though his life is being

A hero is often defined as someone that demonstrates courage, performs brave deeds, and displays noble qualities. Personally, I think that this definition can be applied to both Kevin and Maxwell due to the fact that they have both faced many difficult obstacles with the qualities of a hero. However, if only one character from the book, Freak the Mighty were to be chosen and defined as the hero of the story, I believe that Kevin would best represent the title, hero.…

    Eulogy of Piggy

    • 900 Words
    • 4 Pages

Piggy was a thinker, the smartest kid I’ve ever known. It’s ironic to think that of all the boys, I knew Piggy the most and I do not even know his real name. I hurt’s me to think that I did not realize Piggy’s intelligence until it was almost too late. When we first met I laughed at him and teased him. If I could go back to that first time we met I would have probably still laughed at his confession of being teased as Piggy, but I would still want to know his name. Unfortunately, I will probably never know his true name, and even if I do I will never be able to call him by it. All the time on the island I really took Piggy for granted, his thoughts, his opinions. In the back of my mind I thought they would always be there, how wrong I was to think. I remember that first day clearly, it was far before most of us had spiraled out of control. While we were still innocent and naive. Piggy had seen me and he was the first boy I met on the island. We walked along the beach and found the conch shell that soon came to symbolize our new found society. Piggy had to tell me how to use it because of his asthma. He was the only boy at school with asthma and specs. I guess Piggy was always different from everyone else. Using the conch as he told me I blew and thus a meeting was called, the first meeting. The meeting was anything but organized, yet there was Piggy taking people’s names, the only one smart enough to think of knowing how many of us there were. But even he didn’t get that far, I didn’t give him the chance too. Later on when we set a bunch of dead wood on fire using Piggy’s specs and when Piggy noticed one of the younger boys or litluns was missing, I acted uninterested though deep down I knew I had failed that boy as chief. Piggy cared though, he made sure we were all clear on that, maybe he felt guilty as it was his specs to light the flame. But whenever he had tried to make things heard he was always opposed, mainly by Jack and even myself at times. I think that…

He is always disappointed with Biff because he is not up to his…

However, in the beginning of the novel, he basks in the sun while others are hard at work. The narrator observes, “Piggy was lying flat, looking down into the brilliant water” (54). Though the other three major characters have found some way to help on the island, Piggy can think of nothing more to do than mope by the lagoon. He is understandably hurt by the rejection he faced from all of the other boys – along with Ralph’s insistence on telling the other boys his old nickname – but their situation was dire and he was not there to offer assistance. His incessant whining makes it nearly impossible to trust him, even with his sage wisdom. Despite his childishness, Piggy changes after order crumbles. After Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric are ransacked by the savages, Piggy steps up to confront Jack. Piggy proclaims, “‘What can [Jack] do more than he has? I’ll tell him what’s what. You let me carry the conch, Ralph. I’ll show him the one thing he hasn’t got’” (171). For the first time, Piggy takes initiative and leads instead of just giving his ideas to someone else. For a single fugacious moment the reader sees the kind of person that Piggy really is. No longer is he a whining, helpless child; instead, he chooses to be the one to step up to Jack, who has already proven how comfortable he is with killing. He is brave and dignified, even in his blind march to his death. The change that Piggy…
