The Pirates Of Somalia Summary
The Pirates of Somalia by Jay Bahadur is about getting to know a Somali pirate and his ways of thinking. The book is a lot like the movie Captain Phillips, where it describes Somali pirates and their journies. The book also shines light on how misinterpreted the Somali pirates and all pirates are. They feel that they have the right to protect their ocean and think that the real criminals are the fisherman. To get his information, Jay Bahadur travelled to Somalia to interview the pirates. They aren’t always willing to talk so Jay Bahadur offered them a drug khat, to help his sources open up. “The khat was part of their daily routine. The video on the Civil War in Somalia showed that resources were limited and many people were dying during that time. Bodies were just rooting in the streets, some for two months ago and some for two days ago and didn’t get a proper burial. Untrained people are performing operations on tabletops because there is a shortage of doctors and surgical equipment. There was no water, no food, and no medicine. Most of the international community has turned their backs on Somalia. The UN believes that if Somalia doesn’t get help fast then many children will die as a result of starvation. The UN sent 500 troops to help keep Somali people safe. Somali people believe that international intervention would complicate the situation Somalia is in. Also, within days of the Prime Minister leaving, the UN backed out and left Somalia. At least ten people die due to starvation everyday and an estimate of at least 5,000 Somali people die everyday. According to the video, most Somali people have a week left to live because Somalia only has a limited amount of their food left.…
