The Podcast Serial Film Analysis
Adnan Essay

The podcast Serial by Sarah Koenig is about a teenager who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend. I believe that Adnan is innocent because Jay and the neighbor boy are lying about their story, Asia Mcclain’s letter’s and story, and finally Jay doesn’t seem like he’s very reliable. First, let’s talk about why Jay and the neighbor boy are lying about their story. I think they’re lying about their story to protect themselves because nobody can run around saying that they saw a body in a car without the cops finding out and Adnan getting caught with the body then. Also, who would remember that exact name 15 years later. When the girl said that the neighbor boy told her about Hae’s body and who had it, it sounded scripted. Next,

In his stories he changes times and places constantly, but I don’t know if it’s just not being able to remember or if he’s changing his story because he doesn’t remember what lies he said last time they interviewed him. Something that doesn’t seem right is that Adnan says that track practice ends at 4:30 or 5 and Jay states that he dropped him off then. I think Adnan knows what he’s saying because he’s been going to track for most of highschool so he would remember when it starts and stops. One thing that noticeably changes is the mall that Jay says they went to. First he states that they went to Westview mall but, in his second interview and in his testimony in the second trial, he states that they went to Security Square mall. One other thing that i think is kind of odd is what Jay says he did after dropping Adnan off at school. It’s different in all 3 of his interviews. First he just goes to Jenn’s house and stays for 3 hours. Then he goes to Jenn’s and she isn’t there but he plays video games with her brother and tells Jenn that Adnan is going to kill Hae. Finally, his trial is the most jumbled one. He goes to Jenn’s and plays video games with her brother. Then leaves to finish shopping, he was shopping with Adnan before school but Adnan denies that they went shopping, with Jenn’s brother. Finally he returns her brother and Jenn gets back from work. He never tells Jenn that Adnan is going to kill hae in his testimony. I would think that that’s some crucial evidence that he left out in two out of three of his interviews. If Jay’s time estimates during the testimony are right, his story is an hour off of what the cell phone towers say. Now that doesn’t look good at all for Jay because it proves that he is lying or changing up his

Serial, is a Podcast produced by an investigative journalist and a former reporter for the Baltimore Sun named Sarah Koenig. Serial is a spinoff produced by the WBEZ 91.5 Chicago radio station and This American life. This specific podcast addresses the 1999 case of Adnan Syed vs The State of Maryland. In this case, Adnan is being accused for the murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. More than fifteen years later, this case once again sparked controversy when aired in 2014 through the podcast. In Serial, reporter Sarah Koenig intended to seek justice for Adnan by portraying him as innocent, which listeners can tell through the three rhetorical appeals; ethos, pathos and logos which she presents throughout the case along with interviews, evidence and personal statements.…

Jay says in two different investigations that the call came in around 3:45 but according to the records they came in at 2:36. The records also show that Jay was not at Jenn’s house from 12pm to 3:40pm (like he and Jenn said) that leaves the following; Jay was in the area of Hae’s last-known location at the time that she went missing, and Jay has no alibi for where he was during that time period. Thus, Jay can’t be at Jenn’s house, as he and Jenn told the police over and over. The records show the phone near Woodlawn the entire time of Hae’s (probable) abduction and(or) murder. The same phone was being used to call “Jenn house” at the same time. Adnan has no reason to call Jenn. Did Jay call Jenn?…

Police coaching is also believed to have taken place during the questioning of Jay. Within the police files, there is a document labeled ‘Jays Crinology’ and a few maps that show where cell towers are located and pinged throughout the day of the event. The document referring to what Jay’s activities is a numbered list with twenty four events that took place on the day of Hae’s disappearance. It is believed that the police were helping Jay remember the points on that list by reminding him about details that he forgot about. For example, detective McGillivray sighs of exasperation and points out that Jay and Adnan have both Hae’s car and Adnan’s car at one point in time, and Jay forgets about the detail of still having both cars. Jay says, “We…

On February 25, 2000 Adnan Syed’s world came crumbling down around him. Adnan was convicted to life plus thirty years for the murder of his high school ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Although Adnan was convicted, he is not guilty. The prosecution's case was shaky and was built around one witnesses constantly changing testimony. The witness was Jay Wilds, the neighbourhood drug dealer and a former schoolmate of Adnan’s. As well as the prosecution's main witness being unreliable, the cell phone tower data that they used to convict Adnan says on the cover sheet that the cell phone data from incoming calls can't be used to reliably and precisely locate a cell phone. Lastly, the autopsy report of Hae Min Lee showed fixed frontal lividity, the phenomenon…

What would it be like if a person was convicted as guilty, but was really innocent? The murder of Hae Min Lee was committed on January 13, 1999. The person found guilty of this crime was Adnan Syed. Adnan was Hae’s boyfriend for a while and they were happy together, according to friends. Sarah Koenig is just a random person to Adnan Syed. She was told about the case by Rabia Chaudry whose brother was Adnan’s friend. Sarah heard what Rabia had to say about the case and was very interested. Since that time, she has done a podcast called, Serial. After investigating, it is clear that Adnan Syed is innocent because after school on the day of the murder, Adnan talked to Asia McClain at the library for a few minutes at 2:30 p.m., Adnan did not obsess over Hae after their breakup, and Mr. S was going to use the restroom in Leakin Park where he found Hae.…

The reason the other side believes Adnan is guilty is because of one person; no, not Adnan himself; Jay, who says Adnan told him he was going to kill Hae. More importantly, Jay himself says that Adnan showed Hae’s body to him, as put: “I noticed that Hae wasn't with him. I parked next to him. He asked me to get out the car. I get out the car. He asks me, am I ready for this? And I say, ready for what?” And he takes the keys. He opens the trunk. And all I can see is Hae's lips are all blue, and she's pretzeled up in the back of the trunk. And she's dead.” (Episode I, Page 10). Jay is claiming to have been shown the body of Hae, and he is placing Adnan at the very scene of the crime. How believable is Jay, because according to Sarah and Bill Ritz, Jay’s story repeatedly keeps on changing. Sarah explains to the audience, “I put it to Bill Ritz when I talked to him briefly on the phone. Jay's story kept changing. You were catching the inconsistencies and he was having to explain them and clean up his story. So what ultimately made you believe him? Ritz said they believed Jay's story because “we were able to investigate and corroborate what he was saying.” (Episode 4, Page 68). Jay’s inaccuracies are either due the the fact that he…

While listening to episode eleven of the Serial podcast the rumors about Adnan were not connected to the crime. One specific rumor I have trouble with is the one about him stealing from the mosque. Adnan tells Sarah he stole from the mosque sometimes but not thousands of dollars like the person that started the rumor said. However, how does this relate to the crime, it is just a blow at Adnan’s character. If you say that because he stole money that makes him a murder, then every robber will commit a murder at some point and time.…

The movie “Radio” is definitely a re-telling of the parable of the Good Samaritan because in the main story line, Radio is found, on the streets with only his mum left but Coach Jones took Radio in, knowing that he was disabled and cared for him, gave him a social life and friends. The main story point with the Good Samaritan story is that a man was brutally bashed and left to die on the streets but a Samaritan, of a completely different religion helps this man and brings him to an inn where he is cared for by the man and is paid fully by him. In the first part of the story, the man was walking down a road to Jerusalem and was brutally bashed and beaten almost to the point of death. In the first part of Radio, when he first met the football…

Adnan is not guilty because the evidence against him wasn’t strong. Adnan didn’t have a clear motive to kill Hae, wouldn’t have been able to kill Hae in the twenty one minutes, wasn’t with Jay when the Nisha call happened, and didn’t have a fair trial. If there wasn’t enough evidence to put Adnan away, then they shouldn’t have convicted him. The state had said Adnan’s motive for killing Hae was because he was heartbroken and wanted revenge for the pain she had caused him.…

    Woodlawn Trial

First, multiple students, including Asia McLean testified to have seen Adnan at the library after school on January 13, 1999. In fact, Asia admitted to having an insignificant conversation with him, probably around 2:30 p.m (The Alibi). If Adnan was spotted at the library during the time the state says Hae was killed, he could not have been Hae’s killer. Also, while looking at the relationship between Hae and Adnan, Hae’s diary describes Adnan as “the sweetest guy” (The Breakup). Likewise, students from Woodlawn High School also vouch for Adnan’s character. Krista testifies, “it’s just, he’s a normal, kind person” (To Be Suspected). Additionally, Adnan’s worrisome call to Detective O’Shea after learning Hae’s body had been found in Leakin Park was also seemingly ignored during the trial (To Be Suspected). Instead of concentrating on those pieces of evidence, the state focused on certain facts that did seem to frame Adnan for this crime. His fingerprints were found on a map in the backseat of Hae’s car. Although this may look incriminating for Adnan, his relationship with Hae should be enough evidence to prove that he had been in her car many, many times before she was murdered. This gives Adnan a reason as to why his fingerprints would be found in Hae’s car. Also, Adnan’s inability to remember details of his day from January 13, 1999, makes jurors see Adnan as guilty of the crime at hand, since he is unable to tell them where he was and what he was doing on that afternoon. However, this piece of evidence can be explained. Can you tell me exactly what you did on March 23, 2017? Chances are you probably can’t. Therefore, in Adnan’s case, since he did not murder Hae, nothing monumental happened throughout that day, causing him to forget many details of his activity that afternoon. In the end, Adnan Syed was wrongly convicted because the…

The podcast Cruel and Unusual covers the issue of the death penalty and whether or not it should be allowed in the U.S. It discusses the controversy within this issue, especially the lethal injection and the constitutionality of capital punishment in regards to the ban of cruel and unusual punishment in the 8th amendment. Some of the cases mentioned were Wilkerson v Utah where the Supreme Court initially ruled to allow a firing squad to be used in the death penalty and Baze v Rees (2008) in which the Supreme Court ruled that lethal injection was not cruel and unusual punishment, and therefore not unconstitutional. The impact that the issue of the death penalty and the court cases regarding it have on the country is that people are easily outraged…

Some people suggest Jay had a motive to kill Hae because Adnan could’ve possible been flirting with Jay’s girlfriend. Except Adnan had more of a motive to kill Hae. Hae wrote Adnan a letter talking about their breakup which said, “You’re taking this too seriously” (Koenig, “The Breakup). Adnan was so upset after Hae broke up with him that she had to write him a letter to calm himself. Adnan became infuriated with Hae, which would make him a more reasonable suspect than Jay. Also, others may say Jay lied about his timeline since there were many inconsistencies, but really there are too many coincidences that determine Jay knows what happened. Jay told the detectives, “We buried the body in Leakin park” (Koenig, “The Alibi”). The cell phone records showed there were two calls in Leaking park that night from Adnan’s phone. Adnan said he had his phone that night which as too considerable of a coincidence that Jay could be lying since the cell phone calls matched his story. These pieces of evidence establish Adnan with a higher possibility of being the murderer of Hae.…

    Hae Min Lee Analysis

While listening to all the inconsistencies in Jay’s testimony, Sarah Koenig states “ In the first taped interview, Jay says they're grabbing some food at a restaurant when Officer Adcock calls Adnon asking if he's seen Hae. The next time he tells it, he says that when that call comes, they're at a friend's apartment – a friend whose father happens to be a homicide detective in another county.” Sarah is explaining one of the many inconsistencies in Jay's testimony. She argues how this small detail has such a huge jump from a restaurant to a friend's place. Jay’s testimony has so many inconsistencies its peculiar how this is the base of the states whole caes. This passage supports that Jay had killed Jay because he purposely lied about the location when the police called. Now Jay is smart, he’s just sloppy in hiding it. He figure out which details sound good and change the ones that make him look suspicious. The police even help him! When his details don't add up with what the police has connected they make a little tap and he changes his story. This whole quote matters because it may seem like a small detail that slip his mind but it's kinda ironic how instead of the call being in a restaurant it now just magically happens in Jay’s friends house, who is also a detective. Now that raises from red flags. This case should of never went to court, at least not yet. There are still so many questions unanswered and ideas we still have to figure out. Also consider the suspicious actions and repercussions he has made throughout the…

This past weekend my fiancée and I both began and finished listening to the first season of the Serial Podcast. I think a little background on this is necessary before continuing on my broader analysis. The program is a weekly podcast which focuses on one particular narrative. In this case, a murder in 1999 in which a 17 year old Pakistani male, Adnan Syed, manually strangled his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee in the city of Baltimore after school one day in January. Adnan was convicted for this crime and sentenced to life in prison. The podcast revolves around the ambiguities of this case that still remain 15 years after the fact and whether or not the correct verdict was reached. It features interviews with many pertinent parties including phone interviews from Adnan, which begin every episode, along with official sources/documents and expert consultants. The first way I’d like to tie this to our class material is by exploring it in regards to surveillance, particularly the therapeutics of the self.…
