In their left hand, they are holding a bucket, and on their right, they are holding what appears to be a stone.…

Emperor K’ang-hsi was one of the greatest Chinese emperors of all time. Ruling from 1662 to 1722 he was also one of the longest ruling emperors in Chinese history and for that matter the world. K’ang-hsi brought China to long-term stability and relative wealth after years of war and chaos. Jonathan Spence writes from the eyes of K’ang-hsi getting his information from K’ang-hsi’s own writings. Though a little biased towards himself this book still provides important insight into his mind. Emperor of China is divided into six parts; In Motion, Ruling, Thinking, Growing Old, Sons, and Valedictory.…
The size of this work is as follows 127 by 50.8 by 45.7 cm . It is made out of carved wood and pigment. It is a carved wooden mask or headdress for the Epa Masquerade. The Epa masquerade of the Yoruba peoples promotes the health and well-being of communities. Processions of masqueraders perform energetic dances which suggest higher powers of existence and, since they carry heavy masks, the strengthening of the body. The performers jump to the top of a mound, the result of which is an omen for the community. The elements used in this art are: Shape, the headdress uses a free-form or natural shape in the form of the rider and his horse. There are Lines, traced, drawn in, painted on the figurine, also on his hat. It also has a three dimensional form as it serves for a headdress, it is also round. The headdress also incorporates color, dull oranges, white, brown and black. The texture seems rough with…

The Templo Mayor Mask is also larger than the Olmec mask. The color is similar to that of the teotihuacan mask, in that it is a deep white color with spots of green from the jade prior to being exposed to extreme heats. It can be assumed that since this was an imitation of the Teotihuacan people’s mask, that the same technique to create the older masks, was used to create this mask too. Although there is no negative space like in the older masks, the incisions are noticeably deeper than those from the previous cultures. Unlike the previous cultures, this mask was created to be used as an offering from ancient cities, rather than a face for a body bundle. While this piece is a replica of a teotihuacan mask, which is evident through the technique in which it was made and certain characteristics. While the conventionalized imagery that has been evident through the past masks has been combined to create the mask found in Templo Mayor. The snarling mouth evident in this mask comes from ancient Mesoamerican cultures like the Olmec. The imitation artist took different characteristics from different ancient cultures and combined them, not knowing that they were from different time periods, not simply an evolution of art throughout one culture. The snarling mouth on the mask was taken from the Olmec culture, while the open eyes were…
The inside of the mask shows a man sitting with his legs bent in front of him while his arms are open and stretched to his sides. His facial features consist of sharp cheekbones, a wide triangular nose, a goat-t, a thin mustache, and thick dark eyebrows. The subject's facial hair is made up of black pigment. His eyes are peering up and his thick red lips are in a whistling position with a little tube in its mouth with three strings attached to it- one on both sides and one on the bottom. The strings on his left and right attach from his mouth to his arms. The bottom string attaches to the middle of his legs, just below the knees. It looks as though there is a harness or support cushion of some sort around the figure's neck but this is not clear. Perhaps it functions as a filler so there is not a lot of empty space (www.freespiritgallery.ca).…
One of the most vibrant forms of Aztec art were the colorful masks they used during ceremonies and funerals. The masks have no eye holes, so it’s safe to assume that they weren’t meant to be worn — at least not by the living. However, the mouths of the masks…
Chuang Tzu was a brilliant, original, and influential Chinese philosopher who lived around the 4th century BCE. The background from which he arose involved a period of strife, conquest, oppression, and an attempt to preserve traditional societal values. This situation gives light to the origin of Chuang Tzus philosophy, which was centered on skepticism and mystical detachment (which is why it differs so radically from Confucianism). His ideology provided the disillusioned members of Chinese society with a method to cope with and survive in a world ridden with chaos and suffering.…
