The parts of this module that I find most useful and relevant in explaining the position and experiences of young people in Ireland today are; employment/unemployment, family and education. The reason… I find these the most useful and appropriate parts of this module are that I think they each play a huge role in shaping the lives of all young people in the 21st century. Unemployment is a huge problem in today, having a massive effect on young people’s lives and future. Unemployment in the young far outweighs unemployment in the middle-ages; wages are much lower and contracts are temporary. Even in traditionally secure professions, like those of nurses and teachers, younger workers are on temporary contracts, while their older colleague’s contracts are permanent and pensionable. Where financial means prove no hindrance to admission, students from all walks of life live as equals on campus. Once through the gates, family background becomes irrelevant. In Ireland, although this is not the case, financial support has been implemented to provide equal prospects for all social classes. The student grant is the main source of financial help available from the Irish State. The grant is there to help with the various costs of participating in further or higher education. There are also other financial support schemes in place, such as the Student Maintenance Grant and the Student Fee Grant. These support systems result in young people from all socio-economic upbringings having equal access to third level education giving the youth of society a better chance of having an improved quality of life regardless of their social class.
