Summary
Brene’ Brown, a social work researcher discusses the sense of vulnerability in human society and how it plays a major factor within our lives. In her research, Brown studies how certain emotions relates to the power of vulnerability and why this takes place. After six years of gathering and studying data on human emotions, she finds that it is very common for people to numb their emotions or to disregard them, in order to feel less vulnerable. In this current century, Brown finds that Americans are taking more prescription drugs, have higher rates of obesity, and consume the most alcohol out of history than ever before. This comes at the unfortunate expense of the emotional stability of those pressured to “numb” their emotions. Throughout her six-year research on human emotions, Brown has also found that the idea of “connection” is an integral aspect of daily life in order to feel worthy of social acceptance and to experience empathy. Brene’ Brown took a very creative approach to understanding the power of vulnerability and how it coordinates with human emotion in order to glean a greater understanding of how humans interact with each other. When we are more patient and kind to ourselves, this allows us to express fairness and empathy towards other people. Although it would seem as if being vulnerable would almost instantly lead to being attacked or hurt, the stronger we become in our own identities allows us to withstand times of uncertainty, rejection, and failure. I believe that in cases when we truly want to expose our true talents to the world and be accepted by like-minded people, everyone
