The Present Moment Is Always Where You Are
To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are -- always.
Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things -- all at once. We allow past problems and future concerns to dominate our present moments, so much so that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone ourgratification, our stated priorities, and our happiness, often convincing ourselves that "someday" will be better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves so that "someday" never actually arrives. John Lennon once said, "Life is what's happening while we're busy making other plans." When we're busy making "other plans", our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.
Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn't. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future -- we won't have enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever.
To combat fear, the best strategy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said, "I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened." I don't think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your efforts will pay great dividends.

Fear often becomes our worst enemy when it makes you become irrational and stops you from thinking clearly. First of all, fear can make us become overly cautious, to the point where it causes harm. In Nadine Gordimer’s novel “Once Upon a Time” a family builds a barbed wire wall because they are so afraid of the robberies and the boy decides to explore the fence and dies from being shredded by the wire “(the boy) dragged a ladder to the wall, the shining coiled tunnel...with the first fixing of its razor-teeth in his knees and hands and head he… struggled deeper into its tangle.” (Gordimer, 6 ). The family built the fence to protect themselves but it only ended up hurting them. The family’s fear ended up destroying them. Throughout my life,…

On March 4, 1933, President Roosevelt said to the the American people, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This quote means that if you are overcome by fear, it will make the situation you’re in harder. When I read this, I say that I agree with our former president. When looking at the stories and article, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” “Three Skeleton Key,” and “Stepping it Up,” they show us that fear is our worst enemy when you are overcome by it.…

King once said that “by bringing our fears to the forefront of consciousness, we may find them to be more imaginary than real” and that “more often than not, fear involves the misuse of the imagination.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. We are human, and experiencing fear is a natural event; this is why courage requires fear, because we cannot escape the feeling. This means you are not alone with your fear, and knowing this can help soothe your fear. Knowing this will help you maintain a positive mindset, and this will help you excel in any situation. Remember, a lot of what you perceive is in your head, and not all of it is true. Having a positive attitude and mindset in a situation will help prevent you from getting dragged down by fear. Because of how a human’s frontal lobe has developed, Gilbert states that we are able to envision and predict possible futures that we think will make us happy. However, Gilbert asserts that we are not the best predictors of future happiness as ______ the future is often illusory just like the present and past can be. One reason for this error, Gilbert explains, is that the feelings people have about past experiences are personal and subject to change the more experiences they have, causing their definition of an emotion such as happiness to change also. Moreover, Gilbert asserts that because it is extremely challenging in trying to recall the exact feeling a person had about a past experience, claims about happy feelings are unreliable. He states we use our imaginations to predict our future happiness but because of flaws in our memory and perception, we are unable to accurately recall our past experiences, which causes us to view the present incorrectly, thereby resulting in our wrongly predicting the happiness of our futures.…

Fearing the known is typical for human beings according to Levitt and Dubner. I completely disagree because I don’t fear snakes, spiders, or being enclosed in a small, confined or crowded room. According to Statisticbrain.com, sixty percent of people fear the things that will probably never take place. My Aunt Kelly is one of these people, she refuses to leave her home anytime after 12 noon. She believe that after noon people are getting off of their shift and rushing to get their errands ran and after that rushing to get home. No matter the emergency or situations, don’t expect Aunt Kelly to come to your rescue after noon because she will not leave here home for any reason. Levitt and Dubner state that humans are fearful of the known risks like shark attacks. In many cases that may be true for many people but not for me. What I fear is the unknown important risk such as cancer. From the American Cancer Society, http://www.cancer.org, in the United States the number of people who have been a staggering 12,549,000. Cancer is an important unknown risk to me and I fear it because it’s considered to be a silently killer. I am definitely scared of cancer because it is an important risk that poses a threat to my loved ones and to myself. I have never been faced with a situation where I had to fear any of these unsettling dangerous matters. I do my best to stay healthy and active so that my chances are much lower. People should…

So when I got out on that field, I wasn’t as nervous.…

We are all afraid of failure but there people that are just too afraid, this is a consequence of bad treatment during childhood. I suppose you are wondering why I am speaking of fear as an educational topic. To begin we will have to take a trip back in time. August of 2003 was an exciting and fearful time in my life. The months to come would be uncertain and frightful. My, now, husband was graduating high school and our future was coming at us fast. I was certain in my career path of nursing. My husband, on the other hand, was undecided. We had already been together for two years. I knew I would marry that man. We were planning our lives together at the young ages 18 and 20.…
