In The Prince Machiavelli, an Italian Renaissance philosopher expressed his interpretation on how a government should be ran in order to make his city more powerful and vigorous. Machiavelli explained that in order for a city-state to run efficiently the prince needs to know how to regulate and command the town. Throughout the book Machiavelli brings up numerous standards that a prince should follow. Secularism, humanism, and independence are the most important principles that are in the book. “A belief system that rejects religion, or the belief that religion should not be part of the affairs of the state or part of public education” is the definition of Secularism. Machiavelli believes that humans can make a huge impact in the world that surrounds them. “Rather, the prince should be ready to reward men who want to do these things and anyone who endeavors in any way to increase the prosperity of his city or his state. As well as this, at suitable times of the year he should entertain the people with shows and festivities. And since every city is divided into guilds or family groups, he should pay attention to these, meet them from time to time, and give an example of courtesy” (Machiavelli, 74). He should not care what anyone else is like or what anyone else does, instead he should be concerned about actual problems that concern him and his state. “We find that princes who have thought more of their pleasures than of arms have lost their states. The first way to lose your state is to neglect the art of war; the first way to win a state is to be skilled in the art of war” (Machiavelli, 47). Machiavelli believed that it is up to the prince to form a good state and the result would be having a good military branch. If the state is in good shape then the military will be in better shape. The government should be in more control of the army, rather than having the prince in charge. The Prince was a controversial book due to Machiavelli not trusting human beings. He thinks that humans do what is best for them instead of what is best for the state. According to Machiavelli, the only way to have a successful state would be to have a prince who is in control.
