A student of criminal investigation needs to know and understand the four main principles of any criminal investigation. The student of criminal investigation also need to know how and when to apply the principles. The principles that all criminal investigators need to know are; one is the methods of inquiry, two is the mindset of the investigator and how to prepare yourself, three is the scientific methods and four knowing the four primary sources of information and how to obtain them. When knowing the four principles and how to apply them then the criminal investigator has done there investigation correctly that can obtain the arrest of the perpetrator. Methods of inquiry used in criminal investigation are; who, what, where, when, why and how. It is a method of inquiry that is based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. It is a part of scientific methods, and they are used as part of a criminal investigations to achieve a number of goals, but the biggest goal is of which is usually to determine the perpetrator of a crime and the perpetrators motive was/is. The others would be such as finding and locating information about a suspect and victim, where did the crime take place, when was the crime committed, if there were any problems between the suspect and the victim, was a random act or was it premeditated and why this person, this place and time.
The optimal mindset for an investigator is one of objectivity and qualified skepticism. Such mindset can be manifested through the use of the scientific method and well-established methods of inquiry. In any criminal investigator must be mentally prepared. Mistakes can
