After seeing the success of the banks and railroads, they formed a political organization that was able to make its first law in 1869. In 1892, 1894 and 1896, the populist movement had presidential candidates, who focused on taking control away from monopolies and giving it back to the people. While the movement soon failed, many of their ideas survived and have played a part in laws enacted over the next two decades.
