The first discovery made was in Chicago on June 6, 2000 when sanitation workers found three dead dog bodies in trash cans outside of Craig Boyd’s house (ALDF, 2009). This should have been a red flag to alert authorities, but nothing happened. A week later June 13, the same sanitation workers discovered two more dead dogs outside of Boyd’s home (ALDF, 2009). Neighbors complained of an awful smell from dead dogs in Boyd’s hot basement (ALDF, 2009). The Animal Abuse Control Team of Chicago’s police department raided Boyd’s house finding the basement was set up for dogfight training (ALDF, 2009). Six dogs and one puppy were…
Are Puppy Mills Bad? A young girl got a puppy for Christmas; weeks later her puppy died. The local vet ruled that this puppy died from a severe respiratory disease which caused the air passages to become closed resulting in slow suffocation. They later discovered that this puppy came from a puppy mill. A puppy mill is an inhumane organization that breeds and sells puppies. Puppy mills have been around since before 1970. To this day there are more than 10,000 mills existing in the United States (Humanesociety). The U.S.D.A inspects and licenses these mills. (National Puppy Mill Project). A mill in Iowa brings in an estimate of $15 million a year (Hesse). There are people who were in need of money who began to work for puppy mills without…
This charity saves lives by showing their patients, either dog or human, that they are still loved no matter how lonely. Nonprofit charities are groups of devoted people and generous donators working together for the same cause. The Freedom Service Dogs of America is a foundation full of great people willing to donate their time for an amazing charitable body. Founded in 1987 by Michael and PJ Roche, the brothers strive for redemption of abandoned dogs and help for disabled people. Michael and PJ's idea was to rescue dogs and professionally train them for disabled people to make both the dog and person less lonely. Their charity saves about one-hundred dogs a year and have graduated three-hundred and fifty clients with their newly trained dogs. Freedom Service Dogs of America is an outstanding charity which Veterans Memorial Middle School should donate their earrings to because the foundation donates a hundred percent of their donations to their charity, enhance the life of their clients and provide lifetime support for suffering dogs.…
Doxies may look cute and cuddly, but they are tirelessly energetic, clever and curious Always up for a walk, run or a game in the park, they can easily get bored when left to their own devices for too long. They love chewing things and getting into stuff. Dachshunds can take time to warm up to other people or getting comfortable in their own environment. Dachshunds are small enough to fit into holes and hunt badgers. That’s the reasoning they were bred for. They love the outdoors and with a decent sized yard to run around, they will use every bit of energy they have like, chasing small animals, constantly barking and possibly digging some holes. They will be happy in an apartment, but require lots of play, interaction and regular walks to…
Do you think that service dog trainers should be able to keep their dogs? Well, I do. I think this because a dog shouldn’t be used just for work they should get love and affection just like any other animal. But, some people may think different for many reasons. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but mine is that if the trainers want the dogs, they should be able to keep them.…
Purdue University states that “The Human-Animal bond is the dynamic relationship between people and animals in that each influences the psychological or physiological state of the other” (“Center”). The Human-Animal bond is essential to the well-being of society. Animals can affect people in many different ways, specifically by providing companionship. This bond has existed for thousands of years, though people’s relationship with animals is much different today than it was in the past. The main reason that the relationship has changed is the concept of owning pets, which is relatively new (Reinisch). The concept of pet ownership has changed the way people see animals because instead of thinking of animals as…
The problem is gang members, drug dealers and dog fighters have been known to train these animals because it often has been claimed that the pit-bull and other “fighting” breeds are especially dangerous because of human breeding selection for physical and “temperamental” traits functional in pit fighting (Budiansky, 2001). . The media spotlights these incidents altering the perception of people whose only exposure to these animals is seeing them in connection with criminals. To these people outlawing so called “dangerous breeds” may sound like a logical solution. However, responsible dog owners are having their homes invaded and being forced to watch a beloved family member being taken away to be “destroyed”. Not because the dog had bitten someone or it was being used in illegal activity, but because it has been labeled dangerous for no other reason than being a pit-bull. Cities, counties and states all across the nation are enacting these pit-bull bans in reaction to highly publicized criminal activity involving these animals. Can you imagine enacting a ban on Pomeranians because a criminal was the owner of one?…
I am going to tell you about if I think military men and women should keep their Mwd’s. Mwd’s means Military Working Dog. My opinion is yes they should keep them. The men and women have trained these dogs since they were 4 weeks old. They have also protected them in war. So yeah, I say yes.…
As you may know, Grand Forks is facing a unique challenge these days. It is home to the most stray dogs and cats in the nation per capita. Currently, there are not enough animal shelters in the city to host or feed these animals. Each year, hundreds of dogs and cats die in Grand Forks alone due to freezing and starvation.…
Service dogs are individually trained for a specific purpose. Many people that have a disability use service dogs. Disabled people that require them would not be able to be a part of mainstream America without them. Congress has felt the need to create laws regarding service dogs. Having a service dog can help many people. My service dog is useful in assisting me to keep my balance and mobility. Some dogs are needed for the blind in order to be their eyes, some detect seizures and some alert to allergies. Service dog laws exist, unfortunately law enforcement, business owners and the public are not always aware of the laws for service dogs. As a disabled individual, I am allowed to enter a business…
The Americans with Disabilities Act defines a service dog as “any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability.” Service dogs are allowed to go anywhere and everywhere, so they may always be able to help their owner. However this arises the problem of people having fake service dogs, along with many other chilivians that suffer from fears, phobias, or allergies. Be that as it may, service dogs are enhancing lives of children with disabilities by always being at their side. It is important to understand the social and cultural effects of service dogs, which helps lead us to…
Service dog training has always seemed fun and interesting to me. Most who do it do not do it for the money but for the happiness it brings to them and the good things it results in. I think it is an interesting career because I get to work with and train dogs to help people with a certain need. I plan to be a service dog trainer because I love dogs and I would love to spend time working with them for a good cause.…
Everyday millions of Americans venture out on the roads in their vehicles. Oftentimes it is very early in the morning, or late at night when it is dark and visibility is not always the best. Sometimes people drive along endless dark rural roads where animals are apt to cause panic. Most of the time motorists do not see these creatures until it is too late, and BAM! Animals like deer can walk into the road and straight out in front of a vehicle, and at that point there is nothing that can be done to prevent an accident. Recently car manufactures have fixed bright lights on vehicles and drivers have driven with extreme caution. Although this helps keep everyone safe, a more effective solution is for concerned citizens to plant food plots for…
