later on just like a double edged sword. My definition of a Faustian bargain compared to the play’s definition of a Faustian bargain is quite similar. Based on how Faustus receives his part of the deal but in 24 years’ time he is going to uphold his end of the deal. Mostly due to the fact that Faustus will have to forfeit his soul to the devil in 24 years.
Brazil had to pay in more than one way for the Olympic games from 2012 to 2016 especially the country’s people.
People in various other countries were excited with news of the Olympics but sadly didn’t know what was going to happen to Brazilian families. Little did we know that “Most of the roughly 825 families of the Vila Autodromo community have been relocated to a number of bland, government-built sites.” (Bevins). Which is a unbelievable amount of people being up rooted from their homes so said homes can be demolished (Bevins). It’s astonishing that the Brazilian government would just throw their own people out of their …show more content…
homes.
In this situation the role of Faustus would go to the people whose homes were destroyed. Due to the fact that they wanted the Olymics in Rio but they were not aware that they would need to vacate their homes in the years approaching the Olympics. In addition to this there was something that only the citizens knew about why their home were being destroyed. Restaurant owner Iranis Cadete da Silva had this to say. “We know why they need us out. They have other plans for this place, and they don’t want poor people around anymore,” (Bevins) .
By the way this ordeal has been told I am lead to believe that the Brazilian government is playing the role of the devil.
The reason I am saying this is because of how the government is treating its low income citizens. So they could push their ulterior motives while using the games as a cover up. “In the process, poor families were often forcibly pushed out of the way to make space for what will become luxury developments after the Games.” (Bevins). I would have to say for South America’s first Olympiad this has to be embarrassing.
Based on the play and my research, I think that this whole ordeal is unjust due to the way the government treated the citizens. “But none of us wanted to leave. And why did we have to? They want to make money on that land. They’re going to sell it and get rich.” (Bevins) . I know people are thinking that the Olympics are making the country a lot of money. Which it is but to withhold certain information from the country’s citizens is not right. They moved “roughly 825 families” out of their homes (Bevins). So as I said before I think that this whole ordeal is unjust due to the way the government treated the
citizens.
This deal was a double edged sword for the government and the people it hurt more than helped. The play Dr. Faustus is always going to be relevant because if there is a deal that both parties can benefit or suffer from then it will still be relevant. We can all learn from Faustian bargains because it shows certain actions have certain consequences. And people will continue to make deals with the “devil” as long as there is something to benefit themselves. In the end not all deals are made out to help other but to further one’s own desires as was shown with the Olympics.
