By September of 2000, the Food and Drug Administration approved the abortion pill for sale in the U.S. According to Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research group, 20% of all abortions in the U.S. are now “medical” abortions which require no equipment and are far less training for physicians than the surgical option. “The drugs are 95% effective in ending pregnancies up until seven weeks according to the FDA, and are considered the best method for ending very early pregnancies” (Hass, 2011). Stacie Schultz (2000) of the U.S. News & World Report, states “the drug works by blocking the action of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone, which is crucial in the earliest stages of pregnancy, helping to build the lining of the uterus to support the fertilized egg. When it is blocked, the lining breaks down, and bleeding often begins. Misoprostol, which is an approved ulcer medicine, is given two days after the RU 486 (mifepristone). Emergency contraception is often called the morning after pill which reduces the chances of pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse. It consist of increased dose of conventional oral pill or the use of an intra-uterine device. The emergency contraceptive pills each contain .05 mg of the hormone ethinyl estradiol and .5 mg of the hormone norgestrel. The ingestion of these hormones is what prevents or delays ovulation. These hormones also can prevent the fertilization of the egg, if one has already been released from the ovary, and may interfere with the implantation of an egg. Scientific evidence suggests the pills work before pregnancy occurs by preventing or delaying ovulation. Emergency contraception pills work best when taken within 120 hours of unprotected vaginal intercourse. Taken within 72 hours reduces the risk of pregnancy between 75 and 89 percent. Emergency contraceptives such as Levonelle are legal in the US and UK. In the UK they can be bought over-the-counter from pharmacists. In the US there are complaints that many religious hospitals, especially Catholic hospitals do not provide emergency contraceptive advice to victims of sexual assault. According to People, Planned Parenthood had received around 20,000 donations in the name of Mike Pence, the Vice President, since the election. The reason behind many people donating, and in the name of the Vice President, is many don’t agree with his beliefs, and women care about having rights. Women and others caring about their bodies is nothing new as well, in the cases of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey it widely speaks that state or spouses can intervene their decision. People, most conservatives, believe that Planned Parenthood’s agenda is just abortions which has called for controversy, but it is more than just abortions. Planned Parenthood should be government funded because it empowers women to be able to choose what they believe is right for them and helps people receive services at a low cost.…
