I Believe that people have a right to self defense. There is no way to entirely stop people that obtain a firearm legally from using it to murder another person. For instance if someone breaks into a stranger's house with a gun they instantly have the upper hand if the homeowner does not also own a gun. But if they possess a gun now there is an equal playing field. Take away Americans rights to own a gun then we take away their right to protect themselves and their families. Some people believe that protection is what we have the police for. If someone breaks into your house …show more content…
they are not just going to allow you to call the police and if you actually are able to call them it is impossible for them to get there instantly. It would take them a few minutes before they arrive. That few minutes can mean life or death for you unless you have what you need to protect yourself.
A statement was made during the debate yesterday.
“If someone is holding a gun to your head and you have a gun on your belt it is not going to do you any good because the person would react to you drawing the gun out”. However true this may be would it not be good to at least have the option to retaliate instead of feeling completely submissive and helpless? Knowing you have a gun can ease your mind knowing that if you can just get your hands on it it would be a fair fight. For me just having that as an option would be enough. Taking away our right to have an option to defend ourselves would be leaving us vulnerable. It would make those who have guns superior to those who have to look towards other means to protect
themselves.
We should still be able to obtain guns if necessary but there should be limitations. I have never heard of anyone needing a military grade weapon for protection. A simple handgun will be enough. I do not think anyone would be taking on a small army. They should implement mandatory gun training, frequent psychological evaluations and background checks. This way it will be easier to determine what state of mind a gun owner is in. And if it is decided that they are not emotionally stable to own the gun anymore it can be confiscated by the state. This will in no way stop mass shootings or murder all together but if these tests can save at least one life then it would have been a success.
Stricter gun control measures will only affect law abiding citizens. Criminals who don't obey the law will get any type of gun they want through the black market. While law abiding citizens would be left defenseless. Yes, guns are not the safest thing in the world but it's not the guns that kill people. A lot of innocent people need guns to protect themselves and taking away the guns will only cause more violence.
