The way Jim crow laws striped citizens of their rights is, the colored race was deprived of many of their civil rights such as separation of schools and prison cells. Even their freedom of speech which is the 1rst amendment was limited for them.“Any person… who shall be guilty of… suggestions in favor of social equality … fine exceeding five hundred dollars” (SB page 198 Law # 18) This means that anybody trying to publicise their opinion about social equality will get fined. This is totally against the 1rst amendment of freedom of speech. I think This is very ludicrous because the 1-10 amendments is what america was founded on.“The warden shall see that the white convicts shall have separate apartments for both eating and sleeping from the…
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability could be wrong, so is the belief that a particular race is superior to others. Anyone can have a belief like that - black, white, whatever. I am not about to buy into this rhetoric that any race shoulders 100% of the blame for racism in America today. Indeed, but racism is a belief, not an action. Sociologists clearly delineate between "prejudices" and acts of "discrimination." One can be racist (prejudice) and not act on it (discriminate). By the same token, one can discriminate against others and not hold racist beliefs (prejudice). There is simply no way, short of telepathy, to determine if anyone is truly racist. One can easily assume that Adolf Hitler was a racist based on his writings and horrific actions, but there is absolutely no way to know for sure that Hitler *truly* hated Jews or simply used the hatred of Jews as a convenient means to attain power. Anyway, those in a position of power have more opportunities to act discriminatorily than those without, but I see no evidence to suggest that The Powers That Be are more *likely* to engage in such behaviors. As such, a discriminatory action by a "powerless" person can be more effective than the lack of such an action by someone in power.…
President Andrew Jackson left a long-lasting mark upon America’s government and presidency in both positive and negatives ways.…
In modern times the thought that black people should continue to be judged by their looks and seen as less of a human being is very real. Black people are seen as a threat by simply existing and are being controlled by the rules and laws that were set into place after slavery “ended.” In order to preserve white privilege and power, black and brown people have been denied the ability, more times than not, to succeed and bring…
I do not know if Donald Trump views it as you do. Trump represents a sizeable group in America that wants the worst for this nation. He constantly remarks about discriminatory and bigotry type practices. Today’s times and concerns are not the same as the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s, and as a result, one would think that race relationships would be much improved; unfortunately, it does not seem like that, and I do agree with you. This class has open my eyes pertaining how White American has treated non-white people, which consist of southern justice, reconstruction, Japanese being jailed during World War II, Native Americans being forced on reservations, and much more. There is a need for “equality” and fairness in this country. Those words…
This source can support the view of the historian Joseph. R Conlin, that ‘Johnson rendered a greater service to African Americans, than any other president except Abraham Lincoln. Enacted April 11, 1968, the photograph shows legislation within the United States which set out to prohibit discrimination regarding the financing and sale of housing based on gender, sex and race. The Act made it a federal crime to “By force or by threat of force, injure, intimidate, or interfere with anyone … by reason of their race, colour, religion, or national origin.” This highlights the positive impacts of President Johnson as a president within the progress of the black liberation movement between 1861 and 1969.…
When eavesdropping on a person’s conversation who is nearby, sometimes a person won’t get all the information on what they are talking about or find out how their conversation ended. Sometimes a person could infer the wrong things or not get the whole story. Also, since the people talking in the conversation might not tell the full story, the person listening might not get to know how the end of their conversation went, but if they are lucky, they might. The narrator in the short story “Hills Like White Elephants”, by Ernest Hemingway, was not so lucky and didn’t find out the ending, or many details of what the couple was disgusting. The story just ended with the woman saying “There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m fine”…
The Reconstruction period took place in the U.S after the Civil War where it affect the freed slaves in both positive and negative ways. The African American were freed during the Civil war due to the emancipation proclamation being passed. African American now are able to become citizens of the US. For example they are now able to vote and have their freedom and become politicians. In addition, the Civil War cause such great amount of damages down south where all the battles were fought and African American still faces racism..…

Rick neglected to acknowledge the systematic racism that runs rampant throughout our country. Systematic racism, which as stated by the Children’s Defense Fund “occurs when the way a society is structured systematically ends up giving advantages to some and disadvantages to others” is a problem that effects so many blacks within the country especially in situations on whether or not you will get hired for a job. In fact, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), “by race, whites made up the majority of the labor force (79 percent). Blacks and Asians made up an additional 12 percent and 6 percent, respectively. (2)” While some might disregard this information due to the fact that whites make up the majority of our population and by extension the majority of our workforce, according to Janell Ross – a writer for the online news website the National Journal, “12.4 per¬cent of black col¬lege gradu¬ates between the ages of 22 and 27 were un¬em¬ployed. For all col¬lege gradu¬ates in the same age range, the un¬em¬ploy¬ment rate stood at just 5.6 per¬cent. The fig¬ures point to an ugly truth: Black col¬lege gradu¬ates are more than twice as likely to be un¬em¬ployed.” Furthermore, it does not stop there, along with it being easier for whites land a job in comparison to…
The article “Why I’m Black, Not African American”, written by John H. McWhorter, is about the difference between the terms, now used by many, “African American” and “Black”. The author is arguing that people from an African dissent should be called “Black” because it carries remembrance and pride through the sound. He explains that “African American” is a term used too much and isn’t a proper way to explain the struggle, hardship, and slavery our ancestors went through. Personally, I prefer the term “African American” because that’s what I’ve been using and been identified as since moving to America a decade ago. I always thought that the term “Black” was used for the people that were born here and being called “African American” also tells people that you weren’t born in America, which is why I prefer “African American”. Some people including some of my friends that were born in Africa but came to the US when they were little prefer to be called “Black” because they are ashamed to be called African. In the article “Our Biracial President” the author James Hannaham is trying to explain that the color of someone’s skin doesn’t determine who they are. Instead it just points to their cultural background. I agree with the author because if everyone didn’t care about each other’s skin color there wouldn’t be wars or gaps between everyone. But instead people are divided by race and skin color. Having a president that is biracial isn’t going to affect the county’s economy. Just because Obama is half black doesn’t mean that he’s not smart or as Hannaham says it doesn’t mean he’s going to have diamond grills that read “PREZ”. These stereotypes need to stop because they are ruining the way people interact with each other.…
Race- related incidents are occurring each day, so there are some wrongdoings in our society. Black males are always treated with disrespect. They both was well-known sports player on campus. There are always privileges given to white Americans and this has to change. It is a crime to treat black males differently than white males. They should not have treated the black football so wrong. Black are targeted as criminals and are represented as dirty, foul, and lazy. Treated someone bad while they are unconscious should be a crime. However, the system should treat people the same and sentenced them to the same sentence. Overall, great discussion board assignment and I agree with your…
Racial discrimination has proven itself to being a major con I human society. Statistics show most races that aren’t white or Caucasian are less in poverty than someone of another races. Which will lead to economic discrimination that will lead the other races to do criminal acts and end up being stereotyped and profiled a lot quicker than a Caucasian. From all three classes, lower class, middle class, and upper class, Caucasians are in least poverty.…
A person should not be judged due to their appearance. Today skin color makes you a suspect in America. It makes you more likely to be stopped, more likely to be searched, and more likely to be arrested and imprisoned. When police officers stop or charge a person based on their race; that’s racial profiling. Racial profiling has been occurring around the nation for years. Statistics show that if a Caucasian man and an African American man are both driving a nice car and speeding at the same time; the police officer is most likely to stop the African-American man. Not only is racial profiling wrong, but is disrespectful to minorities, and should be illegal throughout America. Racial profiling should be illegal because it causes discomfort and humiliation to many minority citizens, lack of unity in the American people, and the possibility of real criminals getting away because he is not a minority thus becoming a threat to society.…
Black men in America are struggling with being colored. They have to be the best at all they do without imitating the white man. They have to play it smart in everything. If a black man is too smart he could lose. For example, on the show The Apprentice' Kwame was a very educated black man with an M.B.A degree from Harvard University. He was a finalist with a white man who had a bachelor degree from Indiana University. Kwame lost The Apprentice' job because in the words of Donald Trump Kwame was over qualified. That sounds ridiculous to me as a black young lady. We have to give our all and more just to be enough now we're over qualified? This is basically saying to our black men they will never be equal to a white man. How can this be when black men built the so called "United" States of America? When blacks got free white men didn't know what to do with their land. They had no way of knowing how to raise crops and pick cotton. Yet, a black man can't measure up? Had the situation for Kwame and the white man had been different Donald would have fired Kwame for not being educated enough. Our black men will always struggle in America. Black men should come…
