The term lucid dreaming was created in 1913 by a Dutch author and psychiatrist named Frederik van Eeden. He collected and wrote down over 500 dreams, starting from 1898 and ending in 1913. Eeden discovered that after lucid dreaming, that you remember your dreams more vividly and clearly than a normal dream. He also discovered that there are many ways to start and control lucid dreaming with techniques he learned over the years. For example, keep a dream journal by your bed so whenever you wake up, record your dream and compare what is different from your other dreams. Another …show more content…
helpful technique is to check your reality throughout the day. Just simple things that you might see everyday could be different in your dream. Simply look down at the ground if you feel like you’re walking, in a lucid dream your brain comprehends flying as walking. If you’re floating in midair, chances are that you’re in a dream. There are many techniques to lucid dreaming, you just have to practice them repeatedly to get the process down.
Before we get to lucid dreaming, you’re probably asking yourself if you can make yourself dream. If you want to dream, you have to break bad habits first. Before you go to bed, do not eat too much food.
Stress, family problems, and loneliness and many more problems can be relieved by lucid dreaming. There are many other reasons you should lucid dream than just relieving your problems. Lucid dreaming can create limitless freedom and escapism, we all have unfilled desires that aren’t practical to fulfill in reality. You can fulfill any desire in lucid dreaming because your brain has unlimited power, and in reality some desires can’t be fulfilled by the brain. Also, lucid dreaming could help you get over your greatest fears. When you lucid dream, you might be able to feel, hear, and see your fears, but you can’t die. You can resolve some of your problems in a lucid dream, instead of facing them in reality. Lucid dreaming relieves stress, fulfills desires, and can overcome your fears without having consequences in actual reality.
There are many ways lucid dreaming has beneficial effects on you. Lucid dreaming can help you practice your speeches, performances, shows, debates, etc. People often rehearse ideas in their lucid dreams to be able to achieve what they want in real life. This works because the brain can’t tell the difference between a dream and reality. Lucid dreaming could also be used for creativity and solving personal problems that you’re currently facing. The brain can vividly remember a dream which could help you face the actual problem in reality. Lucid dreaming is proven to help your sleep, memory, and skill use. If you practice and visualize your sporting events in your dream, there’s a chance you could pick up those skills pretty quick. Say you dream about scoring a goal in a soccer game, your mind picks up that pattern of your movement and uses it as muscle memory. Improving your memory is basically similar to learning an unfamiliar skill. Again, you’re brain can’t comprehend the difference between a dream and reality. So, your brain memorizes the movements that you contribute to in your dream, like how you would in real life.
There may be numerous positive impacts that come out of lucid dreaming, however, there can be some negative outcomes from lucid dreaming.
You can’t die from lucid dreaming, but you can have a wrecked sleep pattern. For example, sleep paralysis may occur when you wake up during a lucid dream. Sleep paralysis is when you’re in a state where you have the inability to move when you’re asleep. This doesn’t harm you, but you might build up high levels of anxiety that could lead to a panic attack. To overcome sleep paralysis, you need to relax your body and go back to sleep. Another negative impact is being stuck in a lucid nightmare, it may not be dangerous but it is scary. In a normal dream you don’t have any control over what happens, but in a lucid dream just remind yourself that it’s a dream and none of it is real. You can overcome the nightmare if you just realize that it’s just a dream and nothing permanent could happen to you. The negative effects of lucid dreaming aren’t as dangerous as you think, they just corrupt your sleep
patterns.
If you’re having multiple unpleasant experiences with lucid dreams, there are ways you can stop lucid dreaming. There are many common reasons that people want to stop lucid dreaming. Some of the common reasons are they think it’s a sin to lucid dream, they don’t like controlling their own dreams, they can’t realize the difference of dreams and reality, etc. If you have one of the reasons in mind, don’t worry, you can stop yourself from this process. For example, stop doing your reality checks throughout the day. Again, it’s like muscle memory from you asking yourself, “Am I dreaming?” If you stop doing your reality checks, chances are that you’ll stop in your dreams. Another technique is to stop recording your dreams after you wake up. The act of writing down your dreams forces the ability to make your dreams more vivid to remember in the future. For whatever reason you want to forget about lucid dreaming, just stop your techniques that you’ve learned.
Lucid dreaming is a fun and freeing experience that can resolve conflicts and do much more. No matter the negative conflicts, the positive engagements makes it worth the while to learn and perfect it.
