There exist many kinds of stunning practiced at this time such as mechanical, gas/chemical and electrical stunning methods (EFSA, 2006; Gregory, 2005; Zivotofsky & Strous, 2012). However, some of these methods have been accepted for halal slaughter. First of all, the penetrating captive bolt (mechanical stunning) is the main stunning used to slaughter cattle in the EU, but this method is not allowed in halal slaughtering. The reason for that is the risk of dissemination of brain tissue via blood circulation to the safe organs and tissues in cattle (Anil, Love, Helps, & Harbour, 2002).
