The Pros And Cons Of Organized Religion
One of the negative sides of organized religion comes from the idea of “charisma” and the charismatic leader who may not have the best intentions and could use the power that they gain over people with this charisma to push things that may not necessarily by what their religion is supposed to stand for (Fisher, 2005). An example of this would be the extremist Muslims in the Middle East, specifically al Qaida or the Taliban. Charismatic leaders, such as the recently killed Osama bin Laden, have used the charisma that they had with their followers to twist a peaceful religion into one that believes that their “Allah” wants them to punish and kill the infidel (non-Muslim) and that they will receive rewards in heaven for martyring themselves

However, some new religious movements have taken this positive charisma, created a negative message and amplified it. Charismatic authority was perceived in a positive context by Weber, which made him unseeing to the oppressive prospective of charisma. Zeitlin (2001:238) states that Weber approved of demagogy intended to “bind the masses to the leader.” In addition, the “Peoples Temple” was a new religious movement created by the charismatic Jim Jones designed to spread Christianity, socialism and racial equality. However, dwelling on the errors of the Bible, Jones was encircled by people who bestowed validity on his saviour-ship in putting trust into his revelations. By acting on the emotions of his followers, Jones’ theatrical acts made him…

The term “religiosity” was used by social scientists in order to indicate the extent, commitment, devotion and faithfulness of a person’s participation and practice of his or her religion (Gay and Lynxwiler, 2013). According to Ayenibiowo and Ayeni (2013), religiosity, in its narrowest sense, deals more with how religious an individual is and less with how religious an individual in terms of ritual, symbols and doctrines. On the other hand, religiosity, in its broadest sense, is a multifaceted construct pertaining to various religious activities, devotions and beliefs.…

Religion gives people motivation when they are feeling lost; it gives people hope during tough times and gives them strength when they most need it. A rising issue has called for the attention of many: effects on brain development caused by religion.
