The Pros And Cons Of Steroids
What are the positives of taking steroids?
Steroids often get a bad rap for creating violence in male athletes, but only because many people overlook the positive aspects of physical healing that they have on the body. Taking steroids causes the body to increase body mass, strength, and healing rates and when people are sick, they usually get steroids to get their strength back. However, a prolonged use of steroids can create situations in which people do not act like themselves and become violent. Steroids can help you heal, but they also can cause you to be off the rails. Steroids are very helpful in healing people when they are sick. They are used for certain inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, and more serious conditions such

He decided to go to the doctor where the doctor told him he could take steroid shot injections. The doctor said this would help him grow at a faster rate. He decided to get the shot injections and they helped him grow.
People taking steroids may get really violent. When steroids are used in high doses, this increases aggression ( Anabolic, 2017 ) . While many people take steroids to increase their athletic performance, there may be people all around you taking steroids that you aren’t aware of. The youngest age patients are prescribed steroids is eighth graders. The worst grade at taking steroids is twelfth graders. As you can see steroids can be very helpful but very hurtful too. People need to focus on the good things steroids can be used for , and use them wisely and carefully. Although there is some negative things about steroids I truly believe the positives over take the negatives. You might have a different opinion about this topic than I do but this is my perspective on it. Lupus Facts and Statistics ( 2017) Retrieved from

Why else would baseball players take steroids if there was no benefit. The pluses of steroids usually come in the form of strength increase. This of course helps the player hit more homeruns and throw the ball farther. “Someone who is on steroids will experience increased performance in all athletic pursuits and will appear more physically imposing” (“Lemouse”). Every day people think that steroids just give the athlete more strength but in actuality they do more than just that. Like mentioned in the previous paragraph steroids do more to help the athlete like gain endurance to do the workout and they also help with tissue repair and recovery (Lemouse). Players Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Roger Clemens used steroids more for the healing factor rather than the physical gains. Mainly athletes will use steroids to become stronger and bigger to become better players though. The gains that an athlete gets from steroids are usually seen around 6 to 12 weeks, yet they can still see changes around the 3 week mark (Linnaeus). Another possible benefit to steroids is that for the athletes that use them steroids can be easy to obtain. There have been stories of baseball players going to foreign countries to play in the offseason. They were not on the hunt for steroids but they came across them because those are what the foreigners used on a daily basis. For the athletes who do take steroids this can be a positive to them. Athletes are…

Steroids come in a variety of way to be consumed: injected, swallowed, and snorted. These steroids build muscle to help one perform. Main steroids are HGH (Human Growth Hormone), anabolic steroids. All makes will make one stronger, all can end ones career. “Anabolic- androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone” (Wadler). That’s just a nice way of saying anabolic-androgenic steroids make one stronger using fake hormones. Anabolic steroids are the most effective and have the worst long term affects. Anabolic steroids are so effective that they are prescribed by doctors to treat “malnutrition, growth disorders, and testosterone deficiency”(Wadler) Although most of these short term affects sound good, the long term seem to throw a juicy curve-ball back at you. Anne Marie Brooks, a writer for a weekly health magazine, states: “Muscles grow so rapidly that tendon or ligament damage results during physical activity. Instead of better performance, the user may face weeks or months on crutches, in a brace, in pain. “Ouch! That sounds like the negatives over rule the positives (of steroids) and anabolic steroids don’t sound so good after all. HGH which is a safer alternative of steroids is also used by a lot of athletes. “Human Growth Hormone is produced by the…

At the time of this study (1990) many studies done previously had focused just on the medical side-effects of anabolic steroids; however, the researchers were more curious about the psychological and behavioral side-effects. So to learn more about the psychological effects they chose six overall candidates (three steroid users, three non-steroid users, all of which were bodybuilders), and at four points during their six week training session administered the Buss-Durke Hostility Inventory questionnaire. While the group sizes were very small, the data does show that after the questionnaires those that used the steroids scored considerably higher in aggression and hostility than those who were off the drug.…

Drugs can do a lot of bad things for an athletes body. Meyer, Stephen wrote,¨ Epo can increase the number of red blood cells to such a degree that the blood becomes too thick to flow properly, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes.¨(Meyer). Taking drugs like these can lead to death, a win is not worth more than an athlete's life. Another bad thing steroids can do is lead to Cardiovascular problems. Meyer, Stephen said in his article,¨Some studies have associates steroid use with serious cardiovascular problems, including cardiomyopathies (inflammation of the heart muscle), irregular heart rhythm, development of embolisms( blockage of an artery by a clot or particle that is carried in the bloodstream), and the heart failure.¨(Meyer). This is another health issue that can lead to death which is not worth it. People who take or sell steroids should understand that a life is at risk. People have to understand that what may seem to be a harmless enhancer can actually lead to someone's…

The effects of steroid use has been widely documented, especially in the past couple of years with all the high profiled athletes subjecting themselves to a tainted legacy because of the need to keep there competive edge while there skills where slowly diminishing with age. Sending shock waves through the sports world and fans feeling disappointed and confused, athletes have been slowly coming out in the public eye for their past and current steroid abuse. These athletes have been emotionally distressed and this I imagine is extremely hard to adapt to and handle. But what about the physical damagetheir bodies are enduring with these powerful anabolic drugs? This is where a lot of different opinions come in to play, between the so-called experts and the self proclaimed experts. The so called experts being doctors and self proclaimed experts being “JUICERS” in the bodybuilding world. Some people would say “_Well look, he is a doctor he must be right” _ and I would say that I rather take advice after a bad break up from a friend with the same experience than a happily married radio show love expert telling me what is politically correct. But it is very hard to argue science, which leads me to read up on many different articles from the other side. Rick Collins a writer for elitefitness.com had a interesting article in 1999, that stated how the public was fooled by the physicians into thinking that steroids was not a performance enhancer and did not make people stronger. He then went on to say that congress, was more worried about making competitive sports pure and not so much on the actual health of steroid users. This being his own belief (not fact) says to me that he might be right. The United States of America has a way of punishing athletes who use these drugs as criminals with huge penalties. This makes Rick Collins argument strong. Something that I also found pretty interesting was that the same physicians who said in the 1980’s that steroids did not enhance…

Many athletes who decide to take steroids don’t realize the side effects they can possibly deal with. They usually don’t care though because they would rather take the risk of trying to reach the professionals where they can possibly make millions of dollars and reach stardom. The most common type of steroid used by athletes are anabolic-androgenic steroids. Steroid Abuse in Today's Society, a March 2004 publication of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Office of Diversion Control, defines anabolic steroids as "synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone"(Robert Jacobson, 2006). There are many unfair advantages users have over those who don’t take steroids. They help enhance physical performance by increasing muscle size and strength and help train faster in less time. It is also known to increase an athlete’s agility and speed. The drug also helps users recover a lot quicker, which in terms means the athlete can get back to training a lot sooner than normal. All of this means that a user can get more gains by putting in less work, compared to training…

Steroids are illegal substances that give athletes more testosterone and extra endurance to work out longer, which allows them to develop more muscles and more athletic abilities. Athletes who take steroids risk long term health for short term benefits. Steroids cause changes in the brain and body that may result in illnesses that lead to death or mood swings. Steroids not only affect the athlete that is using them but it affects the athletes around them. The athlete on steroids will take the spotlight away from other athletes when they are being recruited from college personnel because they have more muscles or they have more athletic ability.…

Steroids promote muscle growth and the development of male sexual characteristics (National Drug Treatment Center). Consequently, steroids are often abused by athletes to enhance athletic performance and to improve physical appearance (National Drug Treatment Center). Steroids are available in many ways including tablets, liquid, gel, and cream form (National Drug Treatment Center). Charles Yesalis, a steroids expert, believes these drugs can affect you for a long time. "They (steroids) can assist you a decade or more after you last used them. They can take you to a place you neither have the time nor the ability to get to yourself, and if you continue with the right exercise and diet, you don 't go back to zero" (Brennan).…

One of the most controversial issues with all athletes are steroids. How harmful are they? Is it worth the risk to get a competitive edge on the game? Should it be banned from sports? Steroids are not the answer; not only are there physical bad side effects, there are also psychological effects short and long term. The history of steroids dates back to the 1930s, the were taking from male testosterone originally. They were used to treat HIV-AIDS and cancer. They also helped stimulate bone growth and appetite, in order to help those who had trouble with weight gain. An example of this was a man named Barry Tyson who was suffering from HIV and took steroids in order to help build more mass in order to fight off infections from the disease. He noted that, within the first dosage he had taking at night he woke up the next day feeling like a new man and had abundant sources of energy. Some were along theses lines of using it for good medical use and healing it was lost for the benefit of athletes.…

The harms steroids can cause on the athlete are not the only concern when taking them. Steroids give athletes that boost in their performance which puts them above their competitors. This gives for an unfair advantage among the players. Since steroids work so well and create an unfair advantage, it breaks the social contract athletes agree to: “We are going to have a fair contest” (“ProCon.org”). Sports are about competition on equal footing, with respect for the opponent, and with respect for the rules of the game (“Why Steroids Have No Place in Sports”). Even if there were a safe substance for enhancing performance, if it wasn’t equally available to everyone it would still be considered cheating.…

Steroids can cause serious health problems. Many changes take place inside the body and may not be noticed until it is too late. Some of the effects will go away when steroid use stops, but some may not. Many may not truly know what the side effects of steroids are. In one human study by Sara Farrell of the American Psychological Association, male adolescent steroid abusers who were currently on a use cycle had significantly higher levels of depression, anger, and mood disturbances than those who were not on a cycle. Heavy steroid use, even if it is stopped after a few years may increase the risk of liver cancer. High doses of steroids can also increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Finally, a steroid user who quits may suffer a side effect commonly linked to low testosterone which may cause severe depression. In some cases people have been known to kill themselves because the depression is so bad. Many of times muscles, tendons and ligaments are pulled and strained to cause serious…
