Recognizing the alarming number of amputations resulting from combat, the U.S. government unveiled the "Great Civil War Benefaction," a commitment to provide prosthetics to all disabled veterans. When making prosthetics for amputees it was more common to make them out of wood and steel until the cosmetic rubber hand was introduced (MacRae). There are 2 initiatives to overcome this barrier; the first being the creation of the Paralympics which allows disabled athletes to compete against other disabled athletes which allows for them to compete on a level playing field and also create more fair competition for the athletes. The other initiative is for prosthetic limbs to be created for Oscar Pistorius and other disable athletes which replicate actual limbs. This creation of the prosthetic limbs allows people such as Oscar Pistorius to be able to compete alongside Olympic athletes should they be able to actually qualify and compete, even though there remains to be controversy surrounding this idea. I think that it is unfair for Oscar Pistorius to be allowed into Olympic competition as he will not experience fatigue in his lower legs like the other athletes will do, this will give him an advantage over the other athletes.…

Pistorius is a 21-year-old South African below the knee amputee who won gold in the 100, 200 and 400 meter events at the 2006 Paralympic Athletics World Championships. Pistorius was regarded as being fast enough to earn a spot for the 200- and 400-meter sprints on South Africa’s Olympic team. Pistorius asked to be allowed to run in the Olympics if he would qualify for his country 's Olympic team. The world governing body for track and field (IAAF) ruled on 14 January 2008 – invoking its rule 144.2 which deals with technical aids – “that double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius is ineligible to compete in the Beijing Olympics because his prosthetic racing legs give him a clear competitive advantage” (IAAF, 2008). Prosthetic limbs all started with a very simple problem. Do you just give up hope when you lose an arm or a leg, or is there some other way to make the best of a situation? Hope was not given up by us persistent human beings and that is how artificial limbs were thought of. Instead trying to get around, we thought of artificial legs to help those who have lost them. Instead of only having one arm, we thought of artificial arms to be able to have two again. Prosthesis not only brought hope to those who were seriously injured and lost their limbs, but it helped these people bring their lives back to as normal as it could be. Of course prosthesis did not start off as being perfect and high tech, but they slowly progressed throughout thousands of years to the technology we have today, as well as the ideas we have for the future.…
For my norm experiment, I chewed with my mouth opened as I sat for dinner with my friends. We went to got eat at a Steakhouse, which I forgot the name of, for my friend’s twentieth birthday. I was a little hesitant at first to perform the task because personally if someone else around me did it, I would be a little disgusted. I however, decided to do it because I couldn’t think of another ‘norm’ experiment to perform. A norm is something that is usual, typical, or standard of something in society. Some examples of a norm are going to school, taking a bath, sleeping at night, wearing clothes in public, and eating breakfast lunch and dinner. All those things are stuff we do in our everyday lives and don’t think about it, we just do it because it is normal and it has been taught to us since we have been very little. If you end up breaking the norm though, people will look at you differently and you could really stand out from everyone around you. This paper presents a review of the most modern advancements in prosthetic hand technologies. The introduction will provide an explanation of the purpose behind the study, along with why this topic is important to research. The topics that are covered in this paper will be; the problems with current technologies of prosthetic hands, new technologies of prosthetic hands, new prosthetic technologies that function with the human body, and affordable prosthetic hands. Results of the research show that there are significant improvements that have been made in the past few years. The research also shows that the problems that have plagued prosthetics before are no longer an issue. Each of the sections in the paper will refer back to original research done by one or more of the cited authors.
