When the pilgrims came to New England they set out for their own religious freedom, even though they didn’t always believe other religions had the right to do so as well. In England the puritans, both separatists and non-separatists, were harshly treated by the theocratic government (government controlled by religious aspects). The puritans were locked up or even killed for disobeying the church and government. In the 1620s, puritans in England heard about the Plymouth colony of separatists and wanted something similar. The Massachusetts Bay Company was an organized group of adventurers and puritans that were set for going to New England greatly for economic interests. The company received a charter from the king that allowed them to leave England to set up a colony in the new world. At the time the king didn’t know they were puritans or he may have not allowed the charter to be issued. The puritans in the company sought this venture to be a chance to create a perfect Christian society of their own. In 1630, 1,000 people (including families) sailed over headed by John Winthrop, an influential leader of the expedition. Winthrop was later to be an elected leader year after year in the colony. In the port of Boston was where the central colony started. The colony was greatly influenced by…
During the 1630`s to the 1660`s the Puritans had a frat influence on the New England colonies. Puritans were protestants that arose within the Church of England. They demanded to have a greater and more rigorous discipline and were not satisfied with what the Church of England offered. They separated themselves from the Church of England but still considered themselves from the Church of England. when their desires were not fulfilled they left to settle in the Americas. Many spread throughout the colonies and settled in places like New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The Puritans made an impact on the political, economical, and the social development of New England colonies through the 1630`s and the 1660`s.…

The Massacre at Mystic took place on May 26, 1637; it was an attack from the English Puritans who arrived with Jonathan Winthrop in 1630 against the Pequot Indian tribe. Right from the start the puritans believed the natives to be ignorant savages. They came to the new world with a closed mind, believing God wanted the puritans to defeat the “savages” or convert them to their Christian faith. They arrived in Massachusetts with all of the workers, and tools they would need to start a war against the natives. Pequots were a superior Native American tribe. There were nearly thirteen thousand by the fifteenth century, and took up most of the space between Connecticut and Rhode Island. By 1637 Pequot Indians created strong hilltop villages including one in Mystic. They were strong, brave, and warlike; they organized trade throughout the region, they also came up with new forms of money.…
In our country's repetitive history it is evident that there has been disputes, both large and small. There have been leaders influencing how society behaves when interacting with new and strange cultures since the beginning of time. If the Puritans and Pilgrims were to come and live in today’s society, there would be a shocking difference in our mannerisms, religious ideals, and our common viewpoints. Going from a life within the confines of a early American settlement to the fast paced, consumer world that live in today would be a shock unto itself. With the ever changing dynamics between political and social groups in America, the pilgrims and puritans would take interest in those that set examples for the entirety of our society.…
In the 1600’s many Puritans moved to America for religious freedom. For many years Puritanism flourished as a religion, but as the years went on, it began to self-destruct. Puritanism bore itself the seeds of its own destruction in its standards to become a “saint”, and their misogynistic standards.…
During the early colonization of the East coast of North America, many groups of people of Europe came to the New World such as the Puritans and Quakers. Both the Puritans, led by John Winthrop, and the Quakers, led by William Penn, were escaping persecution from England but each they had their own views and goals in religion, politics, and ethnic relations. Being on the native land of the local Indians, both Penn and Winthrop had to face issues and negotiations with the Indians. Penn and Winthrop had their own separate approaches to politics but they both sought a more just system than the one in England. After being persecuted, both Penn and Winthrop wanted their people to be free worship, but Penn and Winthrop each had their own approach to the institution and toleration of religion.…
But if to observe this issue from the Native American perspective, we would definitely notice that the practices of Puritans were extremely intimidating and they significantly damaged the authentic American culture. Therefore, such change would only mean the total revision of moral and family values among Indians who could sacrifice their traditions, culture, religion and language, beginning to live in European style. Some scientists even speculate that Puritans were intended to use their practices in order to strengthen their control over the densely inhabited area. Through the establishment of a colony and through the implementation of their Puritanism, they wanted the native population to accept all their obligations and to feel positive about their colonization. The Puritans did not have the moral right to mix religion with politics. The creation of colony implied the use of power and control for social order. Nowhere in the Bible has one seen such things. And this is one more evidence to state that Puritans failed to build their “City upon a Hill” or their ideal society. They failed to realize the Bible itself and the words of Jesus. None of the Puritans denied himself, none of them was peaceful and none was intended to help, caring exclusively about personal…
From the pre-Columbian times to the Civil War, America has changed greatly over time, especially from a cultural standpoint. Cosmology, the Puritans and the Great Awakening all played key roles in shaping the American religious culture from portraying the physical things around them as their God and the Big Bang Theory creating the universe to having one God in heaven creating it. Cosmology was very popular in the pre-Columbian era. Jose de Acost was the one who came up with the theory that the settlers came from Asia across Beringia as early as 30,000 BCF, which may have been significant to cosmology’s origins (PP A Continent of Villages, Slide 12). In the beginning, the Pawnee believed in cosmology deeply.…

Although the first Puritan English settlers in North America might have been shocked by the Native American semi nudity and seemingly primitive customs they soon found themselves adopting some of their ways of farming and eating the colonist were at first unfamiliar with the Native Americans methods of farming and with the main crop they produced corn the Native Americans were skillful cultivators of the land planting corn in rose and growing together with beans and squash the settler soon learned to cultivate these crops which they have never come across before and adapt them to their diet Europeans as it was to the native people and undoubtedly helped send off starvation for the poor farmers during the harsh winters the turkey was a wild…
\In September of 1620 some 100 people ,mostly seeking religious freedom from the church of England set sail seeking the colony of Virginia. They traveled over on a ship known as the Mayflower where they were blown off their course. After a long voyage of 65 days, the refugees landed in cape- cod, present day Massachusetts. The settlers mostly lived on the Mayflower, while they built their new living quarters. A scouting party was later sent out and the new settlers landed in Plymouth Harbor that December. These settlers began to establish the first pure Christian colony of New England. The start of the Plymouth colony began. These settlers are known as Pilgrims. The Pilgrims would now face a dreadful first winter where nearly half of them died due to poor nutrition and housing that faltered in the harsh weather. Many of the pilgrims returned home and the pilgrims that stayed began establishing farms and a fur trade. To establish ground rules for governing they signed an agreement known as the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was an agreement that bounded each member of the Separatist group in Plymouth to obey majority rule to promise to defend one another from potential eviction; set a precedent for democratic rule in Massachusetts ("The Pilgrims", 1996-3013).…
The Scarlet Letter, a book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a book based in a Puritan society. If you look at how people live today and their actions in their everyday life and compare it to how Puritans or the Amish live, I believe that some people would be in shock that there are people who live like they do. And these people who live unlike us don’t think that their way of living is strange or weird. In a Puritan society the Bible provided the way of living and the people living in the community wanted to be a city on the hill. The Amish and the Puritans are two very different ways of living but, they also have multiple characteristics in common. Living in a world where there was very limited technologies, different dressing style, and different ways of education is greatly different compared to the modern world.…
The English had never been or explored any other places except where they’d always lived. So when this new idea of immigration came into the scene the English were and little confused but also interested on what else was out there for them to see. New ideas and ways of living were founded in this time of immigration.…
