The early settlers to this great country fled from Europe to escape religious oppression. Most left their country because they were getting persecuted or even killed because of their religion. Although these people where many different denominations like, Catholic, Quakers, and Puritans, they all came to escape from religious persecution, each group varied on how their religion influenced their government. One of the first denominations to settle in the New World was the Puritans, who founded the colony of Massachusetts. The Puritans came mainly for economic growth. The Puritans were very strict. The Catholics moved from England to the New World because of heavy persecution from the English crown. They couldn’t even get married by a Catholic priest! Their colony was a religious safe haven for anyone of any religion. The Catholics were not strict, but they did have the same basic rules like no stealing, killing, and etc. The last colony was the Quaker colony of Pennsylvania. The Quakers were settling in America because they too have been suffering persecution from the government. The Quakers had a Christian view that was focused on hard work and helping one another. This view helped their colony succeed and surpass the others. The Quakers were much like the Catholics and set up a safe haven for all religions. They also gave women more rights. They had non tax-supported churches and the founder, William Penn, made friends with the natives. The governments of the colonies were very different. It was as if each colony was its own little country! Never the less the governments of the colonies were extraordinarily stable at the time. The influence of religion is obvious in the governments. Sometimes it was completely separate and other times it seemed to be joined at the hip. It is no doubt that there was a influence and who knows, maybe it is why the colonies
