The use of chemicals and fuel in factories resulted in increased air and water pollution. This lead to the depletion of natural resources, through an increase of fossil fuels. Economic leaders invested into railroads, machinery, tools, etc. Railroads affected the government loans; although because of the “rates in transporting troops, freight and mail on rail lines they received federal aid,” according to Randall B. Woods. Consequently, because of the increase of demand for resources people faced harder work conditions. “In the weaving sheds the girls work in an atmosphere which, on the third day of my work there, gave me bad lung catarrh,” reported from a German female textile worker.
