Plot summary
A voyage to Lilliput
The surgeon Gulliver is an audacious man. He was shipwrecked in his voyage, then he drift to a kingdom of Lilliput which on an unknown island in the Pacific Ocean. In this country, all the inhabitants are just 6 inches high. They captured Gulliver and took him to their territory. Gulliver’s friendly and modest expression gradually gained the emperor and people's affection; meanwhile he is also gradually familiar with Lilliput customs and cultures. With Gulliver's help, Lilliput beat its enemy country which is called Blefuscu. But Gulliver is not willing to help the emperor to wage war in order to conquer the Blefuscu. This just behaviour turns the emperor very unhappy. Then, Lilliput emperor in collusion with his cankered ministers, act evilly to get rid of Gulliver. Gulliver gets this news from his friend, and quickly fled to Blefuscu, then return to England with the emperor of Blefuscu's help.
A voyage to Brobdingnag
Gulliver took place another voyage soon after he went back home. On this voyage, he and a sailor went for water together, but he was discarded on this unknown island finally. Luckily, he was found by a farmer of Brobdingnag. Gulliver was treated as a rare animal by the farmer's family. He was locked in the suitcase, and was brought to show in the different towns. Later, the emperor summoned him. He present to the emperor to boast about his homeland's greatness, like the wise politics and the justice of the law. However, the emperor attacked and refuted these corruptions and laying backwardness. In the third year of this country, Gulliver accompanied the emperor's tour of visiting frontier. Eagle in the sky mistook the box in which Gulliver lived as a tortoise and carried it off. Then the box fell into the sea by accident, and was found by a ship. Gulliver went back home again.

    Throughout Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathon Swift, Gulliver continually proves how he is playing the role of a mock-hero. As many of the classic heroes hold traits such as bravery, intelligence, and leadership, Gulliver’s character pokes fun at that classic idea. Many epics consist of great heroes going on treacherous journeys where they come across man-eating beasts or other large feats, where as in Gulliver’s Travels, he goes on a journey where he doesn’t have to overcome any great obstacles or fight for his survival. The satirical nature of the story begins right at the start of the tale when the narrator begins to explain the character of Gulliver and the qualities he posses. From that point forward the mock-heroic style of writing has begun and his journey across the sea can be compared to epic journeys such as Odysseus’, and all the life threatening obstacles he must overcome. Once the journey is even complete, their returns to their home are even comparable in a satirical manor.     Jonathan Swift’s masterpiece was intended to ridicule the absurdities of eighteenth century Europe. In particular the ongoing tensions between England and France, the wars of religion, and political corruptness. Swift intended to expose these absurd disputes through his satirical work. Through the eyes and thoughts of Lemuel Gulliver we are presented to the island of Lilliput and its peculiar inhabitants, the Lilliputians. Although one could argue Gulliver is naïve for thinking he is almost an equal to the Lilliputians, it is clear he is smart and well educated. Gulliver is a middle class English man and we learn he is an apprentice under the watch of a surgeon. As we learn in his adventures in Lilliput, Gulliver has the gift of tongues. When he finds himself stranded on the island, he is unable to communicate with the Lilliputians, but quickly learns the language. We also learn Gulliver is very good at sailing and in fact studied mathematics and navigation because he wanted to travel. Contrary to this good, well rounded character, Gulliver is depicted quite differently in the modern American film.…

    Gulliver's first voyage to Lilliput can clearly be interpreted as a satire on human greatness and an attack on England. After Gulliver's ship is blown off course and shipwrecked. On the surface, this story of prideful and smug humans who are no more than six inches high is absolutely hilarious. Symbolizing humanity's excessive pride, Swift portrays the irony by having the smallest group of people act the most self-righteousness. Gulliver is first impressed with the Lilliputians since they seem so intelligent and organized and the attention the royal court gives him; therefore, he completely overlooks how provincial the Lilliputians are. Had Gulliver not been so ingenuous and gullible, the frivolous threats made by these little people would not have been so effective since they have no real power over Gulliver. However, it shows the self-important and pompous ways of the Lillputians. Book I satirizes the government since the people are not chosen based on ability, but rather on how high they can jump or how well they can balance on a tightrope and other completely irrelevant talents.
