two brothers that spend all summer of driving around the red convertible. After returning to their hometown Henry is sent to the WWII when he returns from it, he presents psychological sequels of what he had experienced during the war, this affects all his family as everyone is a concern because of it. On the same way, on the “From the Bodega Dreams”, Ernesto Quiñonez present to us a story of Julia de Burgos high school students that are mistreated by a Caucasian teacher who always tell the students that they are not going to make it far in life. One of the characters whose name is Sapo gets overwhelmed and tired of the way he had been treated by the teacher and attacks the teacher. People’s behavior is affected when they are exposed to extreme psychological and emotional situations within society. First, we will analyze how the exposure to an extreme situation affects people’s behavior.
Louise Erdrich in her story “The red Convertible” presents to us Henry’s story an outgoing young man that was recruited by the marines, and its send out on tour for about three years and after he comes back his behavior has changed dramatically from Henry’s brothers’ perspective. Lyman states that “[w]hen he came home, though, Henry was different, and I’ll say this: the change was not good. You could hardly expect him to change for the better, I know. … He was not easy. He sat in his chair, gripping the armrest with all his might, as if the chair itself was moving at high speed and if let go at all he would rocket forward and maybe crash (95-96). In this quote, we can see how the experiences that Henry had lived while in the war had impacted his behavior and the way he related to others including his family. We also can see how his brother was worried about Henry’s attitude and the psychological damages that the war has caused him, from making him become a loner to be under stress while watching TV. People can be affected by the environment where they live or spend a great amount of time like the one that Henry spent overseas in the
war. Furthermore, how people can be emotionally disturbed by the way people around them treatment as well as if they are placed in a hostile environment. Ernesto Quiñonez present to us the story of Sapo a Child who was being mistreated and denigrated by one of his teachers whose last name was Blessington at Julia Burgos Junior High, as well as he did to his other classmates, and how this affected him psychologically and emotionally. One of Sapo’s classmates’ states that “That year something happened to Sapo. He had always been Sapo but that year, after biting Blessington, he started turning into someone who wasn’t afraid to die. If was the beginning of the adult Sapo” (125). In this quote, the author is showing us how the Sapo’s behavior had changed after he responds to his teacher attacks by biting him. As a consequence of the emotional distress that Sapo suffer for the way his teacher had treated him, had a deep impact in the way Sapo saw life from then on and it play a role in how he loses his childhood as he had to grow emotionally and he started behaving as an adult in order to cope with the stigma created by his teacher. Moreover, how the individuals respond to the stress produced by an event or life experience and the aftermath. On Henry story we the author describes his emotional state as jumpy. In a turn of events one-day henry decides to spend time with his brother. “I think it’s the old Henry again. … ‘Got to cool me off!’ he shouts all of the sudden. Then he runs to the river and jumps in it. … ‘My boots are filling’, he says. He says this in a normal voice, like he just noticed and he doesn’t know what to think of it. Then he is gone” (99). In this quote, the author describes to us what we can take as the way out that Henry decide to take in order to escape from the emotional burden of the memories of being in the war had left on him and at the same time to relieve his family from being worried about him.
