In the chapter, The Red Candle, the author explains everything in detail. She explains about the red columns in front of the house for decoration, the red dragons, the red wedding dress with the red wedding veil, the red banners, the red palanquin, and finally the red candle. I found this as a motif because it appeared in almost every section of the 3rd chapter. Ying-Ying also explains that her mother gave her a necklace made out of red jade. Red was a traditional color in Chinese culture, possibly a powerful color, as purple was to Europe.…

I will start with Shange’s Lady in Red because it is the first color of the rainbow. Her second line in this book is “it was good!” (Shange, 11) in the poem “Graduation Nite” (Shange, 7). Right away there is a sense of passion from Lady in Red. In the poem “No Assistance” (Shange, 13) she explains how much she has loved this man, sending packages, writing poems. In spite the fact that she loved him at the end of the poem she just leaves him the plant so he can water it himself. The words that Shange used for the ending of this poem emit a very strong emotion-passion. Lady in Red is someone who does not hold back for anything or anyone; she will say whatever is on her mind.…

Queen Elizabeth I of England, who ruled for 45 years from 1558-1603, had an uneasy reign. Since she was a female monarch and not male, which was rare in England, people believed that she wouldn’t be a competent monarch. The people who were not favorable for female monarchs or even females in general, believed very strongly abut the issue. John Knox, a Scottish religious reformer, declared in First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women, that a women ruler is “against all nature” (D1). However, there are some who are favorable to Queen Elizabeth’s rule as a female. Marcus Gheeraerts, an English court painter, depicts Queen Elizabeth as a person who is rich and in control by dressing her in extravagant clothes and putting the world underneath her (D8). During Queen Elizabeth’s reign, there were those who were not favorable to her rule and those who were, but apart from what others said, she herself thought that she was a competent ruler.…

Although to most people it may just be a brand of good tasting pizza, The Red Barron was actually a German fighter ace of World War I. His full name was Rittmeister Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, who will be referred to as von Richthofen for simplicity 's sake. By the Germans, he was called "der rote Kampfflieger" (The Red Battle-Flyer), the French called him "le Diable Rouge" (Red Devil), and in the English-speaking world he is known as "The Red Barron." In a time of ancient aircraft technology when twenty air victories insured a pilot legendary status, von Richthofen had eighty victories, and he is still considered even today as the ace of aces (The Red Barron).…

The only scientists who kept the Business-as-Usual sign hanging out during the war were the mathematicians and astronomers. The other men of learning were engaged in war work. Physicists were making better range-finders, chemists were making better poison gases, and theologians were proving that their gods were in the trenches qualifying for meritorious-conduct medals and kisses on both cheeks. But the astronomers and mathematicians were not doing their bits. While the war was in progress, Albert Einstein was completing his theory at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, and British astronomers were working on plans to test it. It was fraternizing with the enemy. Scientists of this type have always been dangerous internationalists.…
