When Peter’s parents leave him and his sister home for the afternoon they decide to play a game called Jungle Adventure. This book implies that when parents leave their children their minds are able to be set free and wish that anything that desire can happen. This book shows that children have a large imagination and creativity without the help of their parents. During the summer, the whole extended family -- uncles, aunts, sisters, cousins, grandparents -- usually leave the capital to get away from the heat and diseases. They leave to stay in Julia grandfather’s house close to the beach in a small fishing village of Boca Chica. Throughout the year the family has always lived in neighbouring houses in the city. Coming together to live under same roof was not a problem because it made them grow even more communal. The men stayed in the capital during the week and came back home on Friday afternoons. The wives, cousins, aunts, grandmother and nursemaids stayed in the house all week. It was a very beautiful atmosphere, they had so much fun, and it seemed then that they were not living in the dictatorship but in a fairyland.…

The Canadian short stories “Brother Dear” by Bernice Friesen and “The Charmer” written by Budge Wilson focus on the struggles and common conflicts between parents and their children during adolescence. Both stories are told in the younger sister’s point of view and show how everyone matures and gains independence throughout and at the end of the story. Friesen and Wilson’s short stories over all focus mainly on the theme of dysfunctional families; which can be represented through the characters, symbolism, and conflict in the stories.…

By critical analysis it can become a very complicating task to define a child’s book. There are many fundamental definitive factors that can be found in books that have been written for Children. For instance, if we take the example of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe C.S Lewis 1950 . Universally it is recognised as a book for children. It contains the inherent facets of a children’s book. Often a typical children’s book will have a child protagonist. In the classic novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe C.S Lewis. C.S Lewis has not just one child protagonist but four. Very commonly we find the child protagonist in the story is an orphan. Again we can see C.S Lewis has shown four children that are away from their parents and the typical family nucleus. Moreover, examples of orphanage can be seen in the classic novel of The Jungle book by Rudyard Kipling 1894. In The Jungle book the child protagonist is an orphan found in the jungle floating in a basket by a panther.…

As a young child David stumbled upon an interest in maps. It was a unique hobby for an 8 year old boy to have, far different than any of his peers. The author shows us how this hobby transcends into his father’s life and how the changes can bring upon new uncovering for them to share together. With their new relationship evolving it would frequently find them at the library together in search of new locations “We must have been there for a couple of hours at least, rolling and unrolling the maps” or “When the other kids were still at home, we went on Sunday drives to Moraine Lake”. With this new bond that has formed between David and his father, it shows us how family’s can spend their time uncommonly together away from the regular and generic ways of society.…

Have you ever though what does the word "culture" means? Well, throughout life people refer to this word as art, beliefs, behavior, ideas or activities relating to literature, art, and music of a particular society or group of people. However, that is only the simply definition that appears on the dictionary. Culture involves other important subjects that describe deeply this word, issues such as, family, language, identity, stereotyping, raising, expectations, economic situation and so on. Therefore, family is the place in which society begins, but in many cases families are part of different cultures, and the ones that are affected by this situation are the kids. These children are the ones who have to fight day by day against these two different worlds. To illustrate this, I choose some stories such as, "the Good Daughter," by Caroline Hwang, "Living in Two Worlds," by Marcus Mabry and "Almost a Woman," by Esmeralda Santiago. Each of these stories reveals the conflicts children have to confront in the adjustment in a foreign culture and the roles that family and cultural identity play in accentuating these dilemmas. This essay will show how children have to face the pressures and demands of living in two different cultures.…
