The Removalists by David Williamson’s consists of many themes and are shown in the play, but the theme that runs throughout the play is the theme of Violence, this can be seen throughout every act with each character having a part in theme of violence.
Violence is the intentional use physical force or power; this can be seen in the character of Simmonds towards. Simmonds use aggression and force towards Kenny, Simmonds does this because he gets frustrated and can’t control his anger towards Kenny after verbally abusing the ladies, by this violent act towards Kenny this can be seen as abuse of power of his position …show more content…
Ross attacks Kenny through sheer frustration after being taunted. After coming back from realilising what he has done, frightened Ross proclaims to have killed Kenny. David Williamson try to make the audience think do we all have violent side that appears when pushed to past the point of self-control. Even though Ross knew never to use violence he was pushed to the extent when he psychologically couldn’t take the taunts from Kenny and bashed him. In this scene after Ross believes he has killed Kenny and reports it, Simmonds goes on to say “ You better not have bruised him, boy. I hope it was nice clean punch on the chin”. This goes to show that Simmonds is all for Violenece and Abuse of power, and also portrays the stereotypical corrupt cop. The fact that Simmonds said “ you better not have bruised him” shows that Simmonds has physically abused criminals before in the past and knows how the system works, intending that leaving a bruise on Kenny is evidence for him to report Ross in and get pulled out of the force, this also relating to Simmonds old partner who beat up the bikies because he couldn’t control his hatred towards ladies being raped and getting pulled out of the force for assault.
