The Riflemans Dodd
Subj: BOOK REVIEW “RIFLEMAN DODD” BY C. S. FORESTER
1. Recommendations. This book is a very interesting book but it can be hard to follow at first because it switches back and forth between two sides, but in the end the two sides of the story come together in the end through a series of events that bring the book to a whole. The book has an interesting storyline and is historic you could say.
a. Audience. I would suggest private to corporals, and anyone that is interested in history and war books.
b. Action. Matthew Dodd is the main character who gets cut off from his company in a retreat. And has to get back to them by using his wits and abilities to survive.
2. Analysis of the Content.
a. Thesis. It’s a good book that tells the hardship of a rifleman in the 1800s in the portages army. The rifleman gets cut off from his company and has to survive on his own. He has to overcome many different kinds of obstacles mental and physical to survive and get back to his company.
b. Synopsis. Rifleman Dodd is an excellent novel about the French-Portages war that was started by Napoleon in 1807. It’s a Historic fictional novel about an English rifleman from the 95th rifle brigade that was unfortunately separated from his unit. The book takes the reader through the missions he finds on his way back to his unit.
3. Key Characters. a. Private Matthew Dodd: Private Dodd is the main character of the book. He goes through many hardships and very hard choices for a kid his age.
b. Sergeant Godinot: This character is a sergeant in the army in charge of a small group of young men, but of course Dodd never knows them . One by one he kills them while doing his duty and never even thinking that these young men are just like him and at any time other than war they would all be good friends.
c. The Idiot: is a young portages boy that Dodd finds at this house that was ransacked and his parents killed. Dodd brings with him but later he becomes a burden on Dodd. Dodd then

Company Aytch is a book that depicts the idealistic memory of a young confederate of the Civil War named Sam Watkins. Some historians articulate towards Watkins having insufficiency of precise facts and sometimes alteration or exaggeration on certain issues. (Watkins & Inge, Introduction) However, it is important to appreciate that Sam Watkins was a survivor that has revealed his recollection of the battles as he has experienced them, and although some may believe his memory has some deficiencies he has a real life testimony that cannot be too farfetched from the reality of the life of a soldier during the Civil War. Sam Watkins was born on the 26th day of June on his father’s farm in Columbia Tennessee where he worked during his youth. There is not much told about other work experiences other than Sam working as a clerk in a local store until he enlisted with Company H of the First Tennessee Infantry in the year of 1861. Sam was only 21 years old, a young confederate, and at this time many signs of war were uprising between the North and the South. (Watkins & Inge, Introduction). His entry is the beginning of the memoirs told by Sam Watkins, an ordinary soldier, not of any high rank, which indeed gives the reader another perspective of the reality of the battles faced during the Civil War. Furthermore, it broadens the view of the emotional triumph a frontline soldier and what they went through rather than focusing on the higher ranking officers. Watkins tells in great detail his experiences and writes of his historical remembrances years later, but he never hides the fact that he is writing solely on his memory and what he saw. In addition to him repeatedly reminding the reader that he writes of his recollections only, he also reminds the reader that what he writes is true. Furthermore, he encourages the reader to refer to history for other historical facts. Later in the report I will tell of an occurrence that…

Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is the protagonist of the story. Cross carries many things while he is away at war but he mostly carries Martha. Cross is responsible for being a leader to all the soldiers who he is with. His character seems to be unsure about the orders he gives and also, seems to feel very guilty anytime anything bad happens. It is obvious that he feels the most guilty when Ted Lavender…

The book I read, The Ferguson Rifle, was written by Louis L’Amour. This book is in a Western form and is full of suspense. I really enjoy reading books by Louis L’Amour, because they are full of action, and there’s never a dull moment. I have read a few of his other books before reading The Ferguson Rifle; however, this book amazed me and was a very good book to read. One reason I love reading books by Louis L’Amour is the way he uses imagery and makes you feel as if you are inside the book. When I read this book, I got a sense of urgency and excitement because the way he used Western dialect and imagery made me feel as if I went back in time and was the Hero that came out on top in this story. Like this story, many of his other stories end in similar fashion, with the Hero being successful. My only complaint is it makes the outcome nearly predictable.…

The different characters that are included in the book include Henry Fleming; the main character is young soldier fighting for the Union army during the Civil War. Henry questions his own courage towards the beginning of the book but as the novel progresses he encounters hard truths about the experience of war then comes to thrive as a soldier in combat through the influences of other soldiers such as Jim Conklin. Jim Conklin is, also known as the tall soldier who proves to be Henry's friend until he dies. His death may have influenced Henry morally than any other part of Jim Conklin's life as the friend of Henry Fleming. Other characters include Wilson, another friend of Henry's as the two become the war's bravest and one of the war's best fighters. Henry Fleming's change throughout the story was also due to his mother, his lieutenant, and a soldier known as the tattered soldier who brings a lot of guilt to the young Henry Fleming which only makes Henry stronger and lets him become one of the most important individuals of the Civil War.…

Rifleman Dodd was an interesting book that’s telling a story of a soldier that gets separated from his fellow brothers and sisters during a battle in the 1800’s. This book describes everything about Matthew Dodd and the things he went through to return back to the fight. While on this journey, Dodd ran into several problems. I’d say the big challenges that he faced were starvation, fatigue and a Portuguese boy that he met along the way. With the challenge of starvation being in a battle is a very serious problem because it’s a big effect on how he could react once in the face of danger. Having a much disciplined diet on his journey helped to obtain the energy he needed to stay in the fight.…
