Although he had power and support from the people, he faced strict consequences which led him to his downfall. At the end of his final years, peron maintained a great influence which led him to rise up and served as a great politician he was once was. Throughout his presidency, Peron led to reshaping the economy and restrictions in Argentina that is helpful still today. He was one of Argentina’s important political figures the country has ever had.
Peron began his rise to power becoming a part of the government of Argentina, joining a classified secret military group called the “Grupo de Oficiales Unidos”, or (GOU).
This coup was organized to abolish the civilian government to support the new government for the secretary of labor and social welfare. After the years of this new government being established, Peron’s power grew, and became very well known all over Argentina. The GUO government, mainly Peron had seized to take control during Argentina’s downfall: The argentinian system of government had weakened, economic problems grew from the Great depression, social divisions also caused by economic problems, fear of growth in communism, and ideological of government approval of the GUO. These main conflicts were taken into the hands of GUO and specifically Peron, which was to accomplish to unite the people and used his political opinions to build a strong unity. He was appointed as the Minister for Labor, for his accomplishments. Peron rose to power by showing great charisma in his work causing other members in the GUO to turn against him. Peron’s law and policies had improved better education, healthcare, pensions to “Descamisados” who were poor workers that idolized Peron.With his wife Eva Peron by his side, she gave him more popularity and power by launching a foundation of her own giving women better healthcare and education. With the support of his people, he began to modernize and diverse the economy by initiating a series of “Import-Substitution Industrialization” or (ISI). The ISI new government was to ensure foreign markets from different countries to buy Argentine goods, causing production to become low, keeping prices in markets low. With this plan, Peron had grew more power from Argentina. After Peron becoming president, his two goals economic independence and social justice, enforcing to develop a five year plan. This plan was to industrialize Argentina fully. The system had built Argentina’s steel and iron industries. The plan also helped manufacture by providing modern technology such as machinery for farms in Argentina. With the strong support from his people, Peron built a free vacation resort for his workers, provided with free medicare. He increased pay wages for workers, full employments and creating industrial growth such as transportation , and social infrastructure . Peron started his own movement called Peronism which is a political movement based on both capitalism and communism. In his first two years of office, he had nationalized the central bank by paying off its billion dollar debt, followed by nationalizing railways, public transportation, and universities.Peron began started his first foreign policy in 1949 called, the “Third Position”. His new policy was to keep other world powers as allies than enemies such as the soviet union and the United States. This policy did not require the Soviet or U.S. to be committed, which later transformed into a national doctrine. Peron argued that many unadvanced countries grew little interest in the Cold War because communism or capitalism couldn't satisfy their problems. In order to improve the economic conditions, Peron planned to weigh out the two and agree something between the two political parties. Peron began to lose power in 1954, where he was forced into exile due to his presidency not being maintained.
During his presidency , Argentina became weak due to severe economic distress. In 1949, inflation grew at 31% from a trade deficit which caused foreign competition. This began to hurt Argentinian business in the raw material company prices dropping. Argentina was forced out of the European market, and suffered a drought causing Argentinian agriculture having a lower harvest yield. Unwanted price and wage controls, became extreme levels of debt for Argentina. Peron’s pursuit to pay off the debts, concluded to cause more inflation due to increasing the money supply. After the death of his wife Eva in 1952, her support from her organization “Eva Peron Foundation” and the poor workers “Descamisados” began to weaken showing very little support. Sources from his acquaintances began to unreveal of Peron having numerous relationships with underage girls that was later released in newspapers. These allegations were followed by Peron and his wife Eva of embezzlement and fraud from his wifes “Eva Peron Foundation” as well. As his power and support began to disappear, he pursued to legalize divorce and prostitution which took a toll on the people in Argentina. Peron struggled with the Catholic Church denying his request to legalize the two actions. In 1955, the airforce and navy took control after a bombing from peronist supporters in Buenos Aires. Many gangs and civilians,
began to burn churches which damaged Peron’s image. Peron’s dishonest behavior led the military coup to take control, having Peron forced to exile and to resign from president. Peron was accused of stealing the money from the state buying, yachts, jewelry, and other luxurious items. The Peronist party and movement was banned from Argentina, civilians were even persecuted for saying his name. Peron returned to Argentina after being exiled for over 18 years. Today, the Peronist party still exists today, leading his party for almost 40 years in Argentina. This party has been the largest political party in the country, although people believe using the Peronist party will affect them in the future, it is impossible to govern without peronism . Many civilians still idolize Peron for being one of the best dictators the country has ever had. Peron made many of his workers and supporters money to help provide for their families throughout Argentina, giving them hope. His Peronist movement remains the central political movement since 1945. Peron had shaped Argentina's economy, and its social structure in many ways that continue to help the country today. An article by Peter Smith “Social Mobilization, Political Participation, and the Rise of Juan Peron” states, “That meaningful political participation has so frequently been denied to his supporters since 1955 might partly explain why Peron continues to stand as a symbol of their aspirations even today”. Without his help with providing workers with high income and full employment, there would be high percentage of unemployment in the country. Peron had left a mixed legacy during his presidency years, but he brought power into politics.
