At the end of World War ll the United States and the Soviet Union worked together to conquer Germany, Italy and Japan. The united countries had enormous amounts of power, which earned them the nickname ‘’Superpowers." Rivalry grew stronger and stronger between countries and this was caused by opponent’s difference between allies and supporters. Many people grew uneasy because of the wall separating families and friends. This was started by the 96 mile long brick wall splitting East Berlin and West Berlin apart. At the same time West Germany was turning into a democratic country, and they allied with Britain, France and the United States, although both East and the West original idea was to be reunited. On the other hand Berlin is the capital of Germany, so that is makes people think that the east side has more power because they are allowed to leave the country unlike West Berlin. As East Berlin realized that they didn't want to live under the rules of the Soviet Union, they began to move to the west side. These men and women were called ‘’defectors.’’ It was fairly easy for them to leave because the east side controlled most of the powers for the wall.
