‘The Waking’ is a contemporary jazz piece written by American vocalist, Kurt Elling, and features Theodore Roethke’s 1954 poem of the same title. Released in 2007 on the album Nightmoves, Elling uses musical techniques to enhance the message of Roethke’s poem. However, in order to understand the reasoning behind the devices Elling has used, the meaning of Roethke’s poem must first be discussed.…
The wounded heart now enormous tune of sorrow, Skunk breath a force to linger tomorrow. Saint unreal a body-less per poster, Bound by force that will never divide as greater. Benevolent a flaunt of no remorse, Unmistakable tone unruly of course. Patch up the hole in your britches; water new soil, Be thankful thieves ravishes in turmoil.…
The reader can infer that sounds in the poem are coming from line 1, 4, and 6. In line one the writers says the eagle clasps the crag with crooked hands, I can hear the eagles sharp talons scratching against the rocks. In line four the writer says the wrinkled sea beneath him crawls in that line I can hear the gentle waves splashing against big rocks. In line six the author says and like a thunderbolt he falls in this line I hear a eagle swooping down to the ground with wind whistling through his wings. This show that the author uses good words in describing the actions of the eagle.…

“Every day every hour. Turn the pain into power.” Danny O’Donoghue, a vocalist member of the band The Script, sings in “Superheroes” about the strength that comes with overcoming the struggles presented in life; similarly this message can be seen in Ishmael Beah’s recount of the challenges he faced as a victim of war, A Long Way Gone. To me, the song is a reminder of how difficulties can build someone into a stronger person. Throughout the song, all the lyrics hint that without suffer and perseverance, success cannot be achieved. Similarly, in Beah’s story, he becomes a teenager with more fortitude only after breaking down and experiencing immense grief and pain both physically and mentally. From listening to and analyzing “Superheroes” and reading A Long Way Gone, I learn that only after breaking down and…
Death causes the Bundren family to deal with change. Each character selects a unique way to cope with the family’s loss. By coping, the characters satisfy personal motives while simultaneously moving on with their lives. Coping mechanisms differ in the character’s emotional connection or “closeness” with death. Ranging from a strong emotional relationship to complete separation and dissociation, the “close” spectrum charts a character’s effectiveness in coping with death. As Faulkner addresses the idea of closeness he tests the constraints of emotional connection. Can the emotional connection become too “close,” enough to drive someone to the brink of insanity? As I lay Dying offers insight and response…
In the poem "The Clothespin" the persona in the poem describes looking through the window and seeing her neighbor. This shows that the relationship between the neighbor and the persona was not as intimate as opposed to the persona in the poem Your Hands. In the poem "Your Hands" the persona describes loving the hands that constantly held him/her for so many years without binding me. This creates the insinuation that the persona and the person that he/ she was describing are very intimate and were constantly in physical constant unlike in the Clothespin where the persona was not in physical contact with the neighbor creating the insulation that they were never intimate with each other and were merely acquaintances.…
As our fragile minds go through adolescence and on to adulthood, we face obstacles that are put in our way that shape and define us as human beings. Some people tend to crack under the pressure others trudge through it challenging and pushing themselves to their limits. We aren’t always alone we have people that are there to help us along the way and sometimes they leave their mark on you like on the last shot in which a man talks about a lost friend who died in war (Source G). We find the strength and character in our hardship to develop and function in society. Hardship some times teaches us how to work harder and not to be afraid to fail and start all over again making people stronger and resourceful. It isn’t how you face the challenge that matters it’s how you react and respond to it that counts.…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
The lyrics of the pop song, “Stronger”, by Kelly Clarkson, is highly significant because of its empowering message. The lyrics allow listeners to feel confident about being strong no matter what or who may try to bring someone down, even if it were their own mistakes. To convey this message, Clarkson used many literary devices. For example, in lines like, “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, Stand a little taller” there is external rhyme, which makes the song more pleasurable to the ears. Its chorus, “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger” is a metaphor, that refers to the fact the previous mistakes and people that hurt one’s feelings, should making them stronger. The theme of these lyrics is that there needs to be growth…

You’ve never known those endless nights, that I’ve known since the storm began. You’ve never felt the turbulence or the blue dimming of the lights. You’ve never met that lone feeling of praying for the sun to shine, when I’d hold my heart in both hands but still forget that it was mine.…
