20 years ago, a man saved her life, by putting his own life in danger. He ran across 4 lanes of freeway traffic, to bring her to safety after being in a car accident that could have killed her. The man was a total stranger, who took off after making sure she was okay – she never even got his name. Marsh wonders why he did so and started questioning why some people have a different level of altruism than others.…
“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw” (Nelson Mandela). This quote expresses that each person is cable of circumventing the law to believe what they cerebrate is true and just. This however, is not implicatively insinuating that everything they do is veridical or ending with the best consequences. In the following short stories “Harrison Bergeron”(Kurt Vonnegut), “On the Sidewalk, Bleeding” (Ed Mcbain), and “Lamb to the Slaughter”(Roald Dahl), all the characters have thwarted around the law to get to what they believe in is postulate. A theme can also be illustrated that resisting oppression could lead to calamitous consequences.…

I choose this three themes is because in this book they play a big role in it.…
“Things are not always as they seem; the first appearance deceives many.” -Phaedrus. This quote can be applied to Friar Lawrence in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence is supposed to be a godly man, but his looks are very deceiving to his real character. Friar Lawrence is not what you would expect of a friar, and is one of the main causes of Romeo and Juliet’s death.…

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the main character Scout learns many forms of compassion. But what is compassion? Compassion is the feeling or having feelings for what others are going through. It can either be happy, or sad feelings. It is just trying to connect with what they are feeling. Scout learns about compassion through a couple of things. She learns it through Boo Radley and his situation, through Tom Robinson, and through Dill with his family problems. Compassion is an important thing in life and humanity as the Dalai Lama said.…
Throughout the book there are several variations of characters witnessing their acquaintances going through trauma & selfhood or in fact being the one under going these traits. For instance Xavier was the lead narrator for the story, he was also a cree soldier who fought for Canada during world war 1. Just like most soldiers after war, they need something to help them cope after witnessing all the gruesome experiences of war. Xavier used morphine to help him manage with killing elijah and life after war. The narration from the point of view from Xavier influences the themes of trauma and selfhood because we are able to view him from 2 perspectives, one being mental and one being physical. We see…
In the “The Parable of the Good Samaritan” the man who was robbed and left for dead was shown no compassion by the people passing by, even by a priest. They show no interest to the man and looked the other way. That is until the Samaritan passed by and showed him compassion, and only then did then did the robbed man’s suffering stop. “[…] bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him“(34). This displays that only compassion can stop people from hurting. If no one had shown this man compassion as the Samaritan did, surely he would have…
What is true happiness? This is an important question that is related to Brave New World, a novel by Aldous Huxley. This book was written right after the first automobile was mass-produced, the Model T Ford. This assembly line production sparked Aldous' mind into thinking if humans were produced in the same way. When Aldous imagined this he thought that the world would be quite different and he decided to write a satire on present day culture. He thought that a world like this would be in a certain state of happiness. The residents of World State A.F. 632 are not truly happy. Instead they live a life of instant gratification, or a fleeting moment of happiness that ends quickly. Also they have no adversities in their life so they are never truly…

Fear and compassion are two very different feelings that equally drive individuals. Many assume that fear and compassion have absolutely no relationship due to the fact that they are polar opposite emotions that people usually do not associate with each other. Even though they are two very different emotions, fear can be used to express one’s inner compassion. Fear and compassion are two of the most prevalent emotions used in regular human interaction, but unlike compassion, fear is obviously dreaded in society due to the fact that humans in general do like to face and deal with adverse conditions. Leslie Bell, in Hard to Get: Twenty-Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom, talks about women in early their twenties facing fear about their identities. Robert Thurman’s “Wisdom” speaks about how his experience of becoming a monk taught him to release his inner “self”. And Charles Siebert speaks about the relationship between humans and elephants in the “Elephant Crackup”. Through all of these stories it is clear and apparent that deep and intense fear drives and motivates individuals to become much more compassionate and understanding.…
