In the Pulitzer-winning-novelist Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, the protagonist and his wife express contrasting views on death. In the middle of an apocalypse, the man holds onto hope, while the woman is resigned and wants to die. Even though the man opposed his wife’s bend towards death in the first half of the novel, he shifts towards the stance of his wife as he himself nears death by the end.…
In Cormac McCarthy’s book The Road, a father and his son try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the majority of people have turned to cannibalism and the environment is twisted and dark. Despite their being glimpses of hope and the Son being showed as the next Messiah, a message of hope could in no way be conveyed in the book. The book is depressing, sad, and makes readers feel grateful for what they have and that they do not have to go through what the protagonists face everyday day.…

The novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy features many examples of symbolism in order to enhance the reader’s understanding of the grim reality within the text: a nameless father and son struggling to survive in a world defaced by an overwhelming catastrophe. The symbols that McCarthy utilizes are of natural phenomena that once existed in harmony but now battle for dominance, such as darkness and water representing the opposing ideas of destruction and survival respectively, and fire and ashes representing disparate concepts of hope and death. In contrast to these earthly things, the road that they walk upon, one of the last existing human constructions features as a symbol of their journey of necessity to survive every passing day.…

Throughout their journey he constantly tells him that they are the good guys; he is always making sure his son has food to eat, even if he’ll have a little or none; and watches over him until his last day. The following dialogues show that he has compassion towards his son: “What would you do if I died? If you died I would want to die too. So you could be with me? Yes. So I could be with you.” (11) and, “My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand?” (77). People often make sacrifices in order to benefit someone or something else. What people sacrifice illuminates their values and morals. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, the main character has to make sacrifices that allow him to take care of his young son. This story is set in a burned, post-apocalyptic United States and follows a father and son duo as they endeavor to survive in the harsh, new environment. From an objective standpoint, the man’s son is certainly an inconvenience when it comes to the man’s survival. The son is another mouth to feed, another person with whom the man has to share the supplies he scavenges, and another body that the man needs to protect from both human and non-human afflictions. However, the man is still willing to sacrifice an easier survivalist lifestyle for the benefit of his son. By having the man sacrifice his personal survival advantages in order to provide for his son, McCarthy depicts the man’s immeasurable love for his son and conveys the tremendous strength of father-son bonds.…
It is remarkable how differentiated works of literature can be so similar and yet so different, just by the way the authors choose to use select certain literary devices. Two different novels, Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, display these characteristics because of the ways the authors institute such mechanisms. Brave New World describes a futuristic era where humans are genetically manufactured for a certain job predestined to them before they are artificially created, and where common human emotions, desires, wants, and needs have all been modified to support a deemed utopian society where everyone lives and works together in harmony. The Road describes a post-apocalyptic world where a father and son travel across what used to be the United States, searching for food and supplies while trying to avoid death, in hopes of finding some sort of salvation which is sure to never come. In both Brave New World and The Road, the authors each utilize writing strategies such as theme, syntax, and characterization in different ways to create aspects that allow for comparative and contrastive elements to be observed between the two novels.…
