Parko, J., Levy, D., Spears, S., (2015) Transgender Military Personnel in the Post-DADT Repeal Era: A Phenomenological Study. Retrieved from afs.sagepub.com
This article represents the first documented study of transgenders in the U.S. military. The study recorded the interviews from several military members from the four major branches, Army, Navy, Marines, and Air force. It seems the basic purpose of the study was to record experiences of transgender personnel while in the military. The study outlined the difficulties a transgender goes through on a daily basis, it also focused on the day to day lives of these people. How they are treated inside and outside the workplace.
The quality of the source
seemed very professional, they had a clear thesis and strict protocols for keeping the subjects anonymous. The fact that all the subjects were anonymous can be a good thing or a bad thing. The process on how these subjects were chosen seemed a little convoluted. The researchers sought out "trusted agents". The entire premise of this study hinges on these agents, and the authenticity of the subjects. In this study this was a gray area for me because no one can prove the subjects were actually transgender. Although it cannot be proven that these subjects were actually transgender I doubt someone would pretend to be just to participate in a research study. In this case I believe the study was authentic and accurate.
This article is helpful in my research because it’s the only first hand account and interviews of actual transgenders in the military that I could find. The other articles I am using are more based on policies and guidance within the military.
Johnson, B., Rosenstein, J., Buhrke, R., Halderman, D., (2013) After 'Don’t ask don’t tell': Competent care of lesbian, gay and bisexual military personnel during the DoD policy transition.. Retrieved from afs.sagepub.com
This article not only has a complete history of military policies toward LGBT but also issues that this community may experience while in the military. It goes into great depth on how the military viewed gay, lesbian, and transgender people, including foreign military policies. The main focus of this article is an accumulation of how recent changes not only effect the military as a whole but how the LGBT community has changed because of the recent policy changes.
The authors of this article are all experts in the field of LGBT, from the military and the civilian world. Two of them are associated with the United States Naval Academy and two are from prestigious universities. The article is clear and very easy to understand the points that the authors were trying to portray. There doesn’t appear to be any opinions associated with the research which makes this seem that the research is authentic.
This article is very helpful in my research solely for the history behind the policy changes the military has made over the years. It also has some interesting research on what the military has had to change within military medicine.
Malo, S., (2016) First U.S. transgender soldiers make gender transition after policy shift. Retrieved from http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-lgbt-military-idUSKBN136276.
This article is nothing more than an interview with a Soldier who has officially changed her preferred gender. This allows her to wear the prescribed uniform of a female Army officer. The stats included in this article are very interesting because they are from the Rand Corporation which is a defense think tank.
The article is written by a journalist who is not an expert in the field of LBGT, however he does a good job of reporting the story and its obvious he did his research because the statistics he reported were very interesting. News article so often have some level of bias, however this journalist did a good job of keeping his and the news agencies agenda out of this story.
This article is helpful in my research because it is a first-hand account of what life is like for a transgender military member, not only before the repeal but after which is very interesting how overnight things can change so dramatically.
