The Role Of Discrimination In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Discrimination does not prove a difference within two races, it only creates a division between the two. One becomes superior and the other is inferior. in the world. Although one group of society may hold more power than the other, it does not give them the right to discriminate others. Not only does the world reveal reality to us as society, we also expose reality to the world. To add, this superior race distinguishes society based on race, class and abilities. In John Steinbeck’s novel “ Of Mice & Men” he uses characterization to demonstrate how society separates people by color, distinguishes them by class and neglects those who have disabilities although what they really need is attention.

In the novel George has to deal with Lenny every single day and it’s not easy, but he loves him and he just has to accept that Lenny is part of his life. In this book, society was frustrating. Flawless skin, small waists, the unattainable idea of perfection. The idea that a woman should be the icon of feminine beauty, a brainless robot that’s great at housework and pleasing their husband. has lasted through generations upon generations, and even continued in the 1930s, when The Great Depression was reeking havoc on everyone’s lives. Instead of letting equally smart women work along side of men to bring the stocks up, they were still told to stay home and be the mothers and wives that they should. This idea continued into Steinbeck’s famous book, Of Mice and Men. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck subtly reiterates his belief that white men are superior to every other race and gender. In my opinion, the misogynistic portrayal of Curley’s…

Slim, who wonders why more men don’t travel around together and theorizes that maybe it’s because everyone is scared of everyone else, appreciates the closeness of their friendship. One of the reasons that the tragic end of George and Lennie’s friendship has such a profound impact is that one senses that the friends have, by the end of the novella, lost a dream larger than themselves. The farm on which George and Lennie plan to live—a place that no one ever reaches—has a magnetic quality, as Crooks points out. After hearing a description of only a few sentences, Candy is completely drawn in by its magic. Crooks has witnessed countless men fall under the same silly spell, and still he cannot help but ask Lennie if he can have a patch of garden to hoe there. The men in Of Mice and Men desire to come together in a way that would allow them to be like brothers to one another. That is, they want to live with one another’s best interests in mind, to protect each other, and to know that there is someone in the world dedicated to protecting them. Given the harsh, lonely conditions under which these men live, it should come as no surprise that they idealize friendships between men in such a way.…
