What is Genocide?
Before we get into ways we can end genocide, we need to know the roots/ history and the meaning of genocide. Genocide was originated in 1944, during the Holocaust. A Polish/ Jewish lawyer named Rapheal Lemkin created a new term to describe the Nazis’ systematic murder of Jews. It came from an ancient greek word “genos” which means race, tribe and a latin word “cide”, it means killing. Genocide means the attempt of making a race, specific group, or religious group extinct by killing.

Especially, the “Kangura” newspaper. It was controlled by the Hutu extremists and it spreaded much hate towards the Tutsis. Even before the Genocide of Rwanda happened. In 1990, in early December, the “Kangura” newspaper published “The Ten Commandments for the Hutu” The commandments basically insisted the Hutu not to associate with any of the Tutsis. If they were, then they would be considered a traitor. Other media such as, radio, broadcasting, television, and through music began to spread hate as well. Another radio station that was known to spread hate was RTMC (Radio Télévison des Milles Collines) began broadcasting on July 8, 1993, it also spread hate. That was the only station that actually participated in the killing. The word “Holocaust,” came from the Greek words “holos” (whole) and “kaustos” (burned). It was used to describe a sacrificial offering burned on an altar. This event got it’s name in 1945 because many Jews were sacrificed.
The Holocaust was the time when dictator, Hitler, created a group called the Nazi. He wanted to end the race of jews. The Jews, at the time, were a huge threat to Germany and many people wanted to end their race. They were first persecuted then was later sent to killing centers, known as concentration camps. Hitler’s biggest plan was to make the whole population of Germany all Germans, no other race.
The genocide in Germany started in 1933 and ended in 1946. In result, 6 million Jews were slaughtered within the years. The allies of the World War ended the Holocaust, 50,000-10,000 jews survived. When the Allies invaded Germany in 1945, Adolf Hitler commited suicide. Many people thought it was because of fear, punishment, or knowing he was defeated.
