The Role Of Globalization In Haiti
Global economy is known as one of the most effective problems in Haiti, after all if Haiti had a great economic development the people in the country wouldn’t live in poverty with major critical issues. The Haitian government participates in many affairs such as free trade which are caused by globalization. The president knows that it is hurting the country but since these affairs benefits himself he does not worry much on how the citizen’s lives are being affected by globalization. In the article Sometimes, The Earth is Cruel by Leonard Pitts, the author discusses how distressing it is to be Haitian. In nearly the past twenty two years, Haiti has suffered from multiple natural catastrophes. Haiti struggles with hurricanes, tropical storms, political instability, and most recently, a consequential earthquake. In his article, Pitts discusses how humans are able to return to stability after these occurrences, which is not the case for Haiti. Leonard Pitts recognizes that it always seems to be “Haiti’s turn.” The main predicament Pitts recognizes is that Haiti always seems to be the country next in line for natural catastrophes.…

It is almost impossible to get a good education in Haiti. For the poorest children it is very difficult to get any education at all. Only about half of Haiti’s children ever attend school. Most who do never graduate from primary school; and only 38 of every thousand students complete high school. Grade levels are not broken down by age, but rather by the quality of work that students are able to do. Children tend to be more dependent, conforming, and willing to place family welfare over individual wishes.…

As Dominican, i know that I'm black, i don't deny my African roots. We all black someway somehow. The solution to what is going on in Dominican Republic and Haitia is not becoming one country. On the other hand is to actually stable a government in Haitia the is well develop. Instead of giving $, is to actually go there and building school and hospitals just like how the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC did when the earthquake happend. The constitution in the Dominican Republic (R.D) says that if you are born in D.R. and your mother or father is not Dominican you are not Dominican. Is not like here, if you are born in the USA then you are American (United States citizen). If the United States wants to make D.R. to change their constitution or to make the…

People in Haiti have so much to fear because of their country’s spotted history with politics and how people in power would wield that power, that the citizens would never know if they are free. People flee the country on the smallest chance that they could survive, because staying in Haiti and opposing the current government would mean certain death. Just like the man on the boat in “Children of the Sea,” “Perhaps I was chosen… as I…

Because of Haiti’s rough economic start as a free nation and foreign and internal factors, Haiti was not properly set up to industrialize and be able to join a competitive free market without damage being done to the local industries that support Haiti. Before Haiti became a free, independent nation, it was sugar and coffee producing powerhouse owned by the French that relied on slave labor. By period of the French Revolution, plantations in Haiti produced more than half of all the coffee produced around the world and 40% of the sugar for France and Britain, making it a profitable colony for France. Also during this time, the population of slaves in Haiti was between 500 and 700 thousand, heavily outnumbering whites and freed blacks. Due to…

While surfing social media, whether regularly or irregularly, one most likely stumbles across a picture with the text “Like this picture to support Haiti” or “Show you care about (insert cause here) by liking and sharing this picture with all of your friends.” On the surface, these types of images seem harmless and actually beneficial. People gain the mindset that if they provide support for the icon in the form of “likes,” then they directly help those that the image shows the cause for. The producer of the photo however believes that this type of mindset causes deeper problems than what the social media poster actually intends. People stop volunteering and start liking pictures on social media to show what they call “solidarity” with those…

Driving through Guatemala and talking to locals in Guatemala opened my eyes to the agriculture. Mostly everything that I saw was similar to the information that I found during the research in my presentation. But seeing what I learned about opened my eyes to the what the country of Guatemala was dealing with. Thought my time while driving through Guatemala I began to discover many interesting things about Guatemala. I noticed that all the farming fields seemed to take over the landscape. It seemed that there were just farming areas nestled in every which corner on the side of the mountains. I thought what happened to all the trees. It seemed that they had all been cut down. While in Guatemala I learned that many of the families that own the…

After spending ten days in Haiti, I came to realize how spoiled and easy life is for me. Seeing the Haitian people’s daily work and living conditions really has had an impact on how I view various situations. Adaptation is a part of human nature. People in the United States have adapted to various diseases and their way of life, just like the people of Haiti adapt to different diseases and their ways of life. Disease and poverty still control Haiti and those who live in it, unlike those of us living in the U.S. The country has received millions of dollars in aid since the earthquake in 2010, but how much longer until they can support themselves?…

In Haiti, the trafficking that occurs is that they exploit “restaveks” children, sex trafficking, and illegal adoption; it is a serious problem within the country. The government and legislation is lacking within Haiti because of all the earthquakes that occur and that tear apart the country. Trafficking is still happening and the Haitian government is doing everything they can to prevent it. Legislation criminalizing all forms of human trafficking has been pending in Parliament for several years. The Haitian justice system did not make advances in prosecuting traffickers during the reporting period. The government did not report any investigations, prosecutions or convictions of trafficking offenders in Haiti. There are many problems with this country that is hard to prevent crime with only 35 Haitians working to stop these crimes. Haiti is working diligently to also build up there government and to also work with organizations like NGO to help provide shelter, food, medical, and psychosocial support.…

Overwhelmed. The only word I can think of when the flight attendant calmly says, “Welcome to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, you may now unfastened your seatbelts.” Tears fell from my eyes and all the emotions that I was feeling for the last 4 hours suddenly began pouring out. I had never been to Haiti and the only mindset of it I had was that there was killing and kidnapping. I was extremely anxious because of that. “NO!, YES!, NO!, YES!, NO!!”, my conflicted mind begins to yell. I couldn't believe that I was actually there. Holding up the line, I got off the plane as slowly as possible. Ironically, being up in the air was much more relieving than being on the grounds IN HAITI !. “Daph, you’ll be alright,” my mom says. “Hopefully,” I mumbled. I thought to myself that maybe just maybe I will actually enjoy it.You will never actually understand the importance of bigger things without appreciating the little things…

I was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to be more specific Cite Soleil and La saline respectively. These two places are probably the most dangerous part of the world, and two of the poorest part of Haiti. From a very young age, I was exposed to events ranging from seeing cadavers in the street almost on a daily basis, drug dealing, authority brutalities to lose a couple of childhood friends due to gang activities. In the midst of my environment disadvantages, my parents were doing a little bit better compared to the rest of our community until I reached the age of 5. One month after my 5th birthday, my life took drastic turn. My mother migrated to the United States (US) and left me in Haiti with my father, who subsequently became a drug addict. My living conditions came from as being ‘doing ok’ to worst. I suffered malnutrition, if it were not for my neighbors I would…
