The Role Of Insanity In Silverman's Poems
Several meaningful hints revealed after Edgar's passing show that he might have committed suicide. The poet's final known love, Helen, could have influenced his death. He was deeply in love with her and decided to propose, but was rejected. It was said that Helen was extremely upset with him and proceeded to intoxicate herself before being kicked out of her own home. After being rejected, Edgar had immediately left the scene, and as said by Kenneth Silverman; "At daybreak he went out and tried to quiet himself by a rapid walk in the cold air. It did not help, he said: 'The demon tormented me still.'" (Silverman 373). One might think he could channel his emotions through poetry, and they are correct. Edgar's passion for writing about insanity

Jim Steven’s poem “Schizophrenia” depicts a story of immense loss and hopelessness that overcomes many homes. It is all too ordinary to hear about a father abandoning his family, a mother who is broken and feels defeated, and the children who have suffer through it all in fear and the overwhelming feeling of abandonment. Feelings such as those found in the preceding sentence are found throughout Jim Steven’s poem “Schizophrenia”. The poem reflects the conflicts that occur within the house. However, the crisis that is occurring within the family is addressed indirectly rather than directly, it is addressed through personifying the house. By personifying the house in every facet, “Schizophrenia” reveals the reality of the family’s relationships, or lack thereof.…

On October 3, 1849, Edgar was found in the bathroom at the Gunnell’s Hall, a public house that was being used as a polling place for an election. The magazine editor, Joseph Snodgrass, sent Poe to the Washington College Hospital, where he spent his last days in and out of consciousness, far away from home, and surrounded by nothing but strangers. They were never able to explain what happened to him to cause any of this. On October 7, 1849, only at the age of…

Edgar Allan Poe is a brilliant author who wrote amazing stories and poems using various emotional effects. Throughout his lifetime he went through lots of tragedy and personal conflicts. Within his pieces of literature he uses his creative writing style abilities by making readers feel emotional effects such as horror and sorrow. With all of his past conflicts, I believe it made him a lot better at connecting to readers in other ways certain authors couldn’t. Poe’s style is characterized by his use of sound imagery, irony, and repeated elements.…

With all of the violence in the past, and now the most recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, society is more scared than ever. Dylann Roof, proven to be a white supremacist, walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed innocent people. This incident hit home for so many Americans because not only did the innocent people die, but it was in one of the safest places imaginable, a church (Tauber, Michelle). Many believe that weapons are to blame for this, and others believe that racism is the main focal point. This is not the first of violent crimes in a local church. A poem was written by Dudley Randall about a true story that happened in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. A group of white supremacists bombed a church that belonged to Martin Luther King Jr. What they did not know was that there were four little girls playing in there at the time. The church should be a safe, quiet place one can pray to God, but these incidents indicate that violence is creeping into the most innocent of…
