Lagos is a poor city in Nigeria where urbanization has occurred because the population of Lagos has increased. People began moving to Lagos because of economic opportunities, the attraction of the city, of a better life, to be able to obtain provision of services needed that could not be found in rural areas such as medical / health facilities, education, community facilities and because in the rural areas surrounding Lagos the population had increased yet the agricultural supplies used to support large numbers of people and decreased forcing people to move from other areas in Nigeria to Lagos. The absence of virtually any reliable current demographic data has not prevented national and international bodies from generating estimates and projections of population and population growth in Nigeria. The World Bank estimate of Nigeria's 1990 population was 119 million, with an estimated annual growth rate of 3.3 percent. Although other sources differed on the exact figure, virtually all sources agreed that the annual rate of population growth in the country had increased from the 1950s through most of the 1980s. The government estimated a 2 percent rate of population growth for most of the country between 1953 and 1962. For the period between 1965 and 1973, the World Bank estimated Nigeria's growth rate at 2.5 percent, increasing to 2.7 percent between 1973 and 1983. Projections about the population growth rate were uncertain, however, in view of questions concerning the accuracy of Nigerian census statistics.…

The significance of efficient and effective data management system in development planning cannot be overemphasized. The basic tool for planning is data. Most decisions in policy making and development planning are related to an issue at a place or space. That is, they are geo-located. Geo-spatial information is information about place and space. There can be no effective development without geo-spatial information (Clarke, 2013). He stressed that the three essential requirements of usability, accessibility and availability can be achieved through Geospatial Data Infrastructure (GDI), which involves bringing relevant geo-spatial information to the user, reliably and consistently within a governance framework. It is called by different names such as Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and may be preceded by to signify that the SDI is being developed at the national level. (Ikhuoria, 2013).…

Information about population is collected in two main ways: by enumeration at a point of time, and by recording events as they occur over a period. Censuses and social surveys are examples of the first method, and provide ‘stock’ data (see §2.5), while birth registrations and migration records (‘flow’ data) are examples of the second. The information may purport to be complete or it may take the form of a sample. The aim of this chapter is to describe the chief features of the statistics so collected and to indicate the limitations the demographer may need to bear in mind in attempting to interpret the meaning of the published information. In this connexion it is important to consider the relationship the data bear to the biological events in human existence which are the basic objects of study. Although these events are essentially the ‘facts of life’ with which people generally are familiar, what the student of population needs is a precise knowledge of how they are defined for practical purposes and their consequent place in demographic analysis.…
