His loneliness forces him to acquiesce when Lennie tries to make a decent conversation with him. But when Lennie fills Crooks in about the dream farm place, all he does is laughs. It could be because he saw too many men say that but they end up working for someone or just simply ended up in ditch. Published in 1937, John Steinbeck wrote a moving and powerful novel titled, Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck’s reliance on textual description makes the work accessible to young readers, as does his use of foreshadowing and reoccurring images. Equally important is the way Steinebeck intertwines loneliness, friendship, and sadness. A professor at the University of San Jose stated, “The near impossibility of attaining the American Dream in the face of the huge and random challenges, like natural and economic disasters became the central theme of Steinbeck’s novel” (“Of Mice and Men – Critical Reception” 1). Marxist and New Criticism were the two approaches applied to the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.…

In of mice and men, characters are cruel when they have power to control others of lower status. Many characters display a disregard for ones feeling or emotions through physical and verbal actions. On the ranch, hierarchy is extremely prominent and cruelty is a side effect of it. The characters that are lower of status are not cruel to those above. The character Curley’s wife, is an impeccable example of this. His forehead glistened with beads of sweat and his face was as red as a cherry. He couldn't take it anymore he was going to EXPLODE. Red is a representative of anger because when I was a kid and watched a cartoon, a character face that got angry would turn red, in addition they often would use a thermometer to show the temperature rising of their level of anger. Also, with me, I feel myself getting hot from the inside out, when I'm angry and if you were able to have seen a change in color on my skin, I feel like it would be red. In Of Mice and Men, George, Lennie, and Curley had showed many examples of anger throughout. You may not realize it, but our emotions and everyday things in our life symbolize different colors. In Steinbeck's story,…

When it comes to the way people view murder, they are usually pretty one sided. Some people on earth have stubborn minds, they are full with static. The main opinion shared between these folks seems to be “Murder is murder. Murder is bad. The person who murders is therefore bad.” These bland, stale statements need to be thought through more thoroughly. What if the person who committed this crime had other intentions? What if they weren’t cold hearted and actually had a soul? In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men, Lennie, a person with mental issues, doesn’t deserve to be held accountable for his actions for several justifiable reasons.…

Throughout history, we've been told many stories and heard accounts of women who have been looked upon as their husbands' property and maltreated. Wives and female spouses have been violently abused and even killed in many cases, by their partners. John Steinbeck's "The Murder" encourages readers to react against the horrific abuse some woman face daily. Steinbeck's story shows Jim thinking of and treating Jelka like an animal and an inferior. The narrator and Jim's comparisons of her to an animal are portrayed later in the way she is brutally beaten by Jim in the barn on their farm. The limited omniscient point of view used to tell the story also contributes to the presentation of Jelka being less than human. Steinbeck's story in many ways shows the horrendous actions people take against women, making many readers feel that females are little more than objects of property.…
