The Role Of Obstacles In My Life
Throughout an individual’s life there will be some obstacles in their path. Some obstacles may take years to get over, but some may only take days to months to get over. Some people experience themselves worrying about making everyone in this world like them, or always wanting to keep the peace between everyone. Stress is one of the biggest obstacles individual’s faces in their everyday lives. A relaxing way to deal with stress is to imagine a soothing environment. Also, people use defense mechanisms to push themselves away from disagreeable behaviors and emotions. Throughout my life, I have a specific thought that has occurred repeatedly as I have grown older. This irrational belief is I must keep the peace between everyone, so there will not be any conflict between family and friends. This irrational belief has hung around my life since I was in middle school. In middle school one of my cousins, named Andrea, lived with us, my mother and cousin would fight over them helping around the house. Although, I understand where my mother was coming from because if …show more content…
The first mechanism is Intellectualization, when I found out my grandmother passed away: I kept saying she was in good health, she was not sick, she could get around, and she did not act differently when I left for school that morning. I would not take into consideration that she was actually gone and was not here anymore. The second defense mechanism is Compensation, I usually tend to do this when I am asked to drive a manual vehicle. One scenario I have used is I may not know how to drive a manual, but I can defiantly drive an automatic. The strengths of these mechanisms helps me defend my emotions in a way that helps me cope with each situation I face. The weakness of these mechanisms is that I try to cover up my emotions with these defenses. When entering this class I did not realize that I have been using defense

There are many different defense mechanisms, the main ones are: repression (pushing uncomfortable thoughts into the subconscious), projection (relating bad feelings to other people), displacement (redirecting emotions to a substitute source), sublimation (redirecting wrong feelings or urges into socially acceptable ones), denial (believing that the truth to be actually false), regression (revert to acting like a child), rationalization (someone creating false justifications for actions) , and reaction formation (acting the opposite of what one is feeling). Obstacles and barriers are tools that mold and shape people in their everyday life. Some might cause someone to break out into a pandemonium, while others might be small causing short disarray. Like many other people, I have had my share of dilemmas. These dilemmas range between too big for me to handle to being small enough for me to forget about…

Defense mechanisms are unconscious strategies that protect the ego, or "I", that are used to distort reality and relieve anxiety and guilt. People often utilize defense mechanisms to protect themselves from being consciously aware of a thought or feeling which they cannot tolerate and to cope with life and unavoidable stress. There are several different types of defense mechanisms. Some of the most commonly used defense mechanisms are repression, which is forgetting painful or dangerous thoughts; denial, refusing to admit the unpleasant reality; rationalization, justifying or substituting socially acceptable reasons; projection, transferring unacceptable motives or impulses to others and regression, which is responding to a threatening situation in a way that you would at an earlier age. The defense mechanism that I found the most interesting and one of the one's that I see the most of working with my clients is displacement. Displacement is substituting a less threatening object for the original object of impulse.…

What is life? Life consists of experiences, challenges, and achievements; all of which are building blocks that essentially create ones path to success. In one’s lifetime they can experience tough and difficult challenges. Sometimes these challenges become unbearable, especially when the odds are against you. However, going against all odds is something everyone is capable of doing, and to overcome these challenges everyone needs to have a “never quit” attitude in life. If we develop it, we'll overcome quite a bit.…

Defense mechanisms, in psychoanalysis, are any of a variety of unconscious personality reactions which the ego uses to protect the conscious mind from threatening feelings and perceptions. Defense mechanisms can be psychologically healthy or maladaptive, but tension reduction is the overall goal in both cases(About). Primary defense mechanisms include repression and denial, which serve to prevent unacceptable ideas or impulses from entering the conscience. Secondary defense mechanisms-generally appearing as an outgrowth of the primary defense mechanisms-include projection, reaction formation, displacement, sublimation, and isolation(AllPsych).…

A great man named Henry Ford once remarked, “Obstacles are those frightening things you see once you take your eyes off your goals.” This is a quote that is continuously pushing me as I see life through different people's eyes. I can read someone's emotions and see what they’re seeing just by a simple glance at them. I’ve been lost many times before, not knowing what I will make of my life, but just the other day, I realized that I have so much time ahead of me and I need to make the best use of it.…

I have experienced many obstacles in my life, but there’s that one obstacle that changed my life in a way I didn’t imagine. As a matter of fact I was not aware that such thing would present itself as an obstacle in my life but it did. In 2006 I joined the U.S. Army and was shipped off to Basic Combat Training. Just being there was a challenge on itself. During Basic Training we were taken to The Confidence Obstacle Course. At first I thought it was easy, run over logs, climb short walls, swing on ropes and a few other things that in reality were a lot of fun. And right before the end of the day the Drill Sergeants took us to the last obstacle. A 40 feet high tower with ropes going down to the ground and away from the tower. From the ground level it didn’t look that bad for me, but once I climbed on top and was told by my Drill Sergeant to slide down the rope head first I panicked. Until that day I was not aware of how afraid I was of heights. It took some time for me to gather the confidence I needed to slide down the rope and finally after some encouragement from my Drill Sergeant I did it. My fear of…

There are four main defence mechanisms; Denial, Displacement, Rationalisation and Sublimation. Displacement is where the mind redirects emotions from a dangerous object to a safe object. An example of this would be if an employee is really angry at their boss, but instead of punching their boss, they punch a pillow. This may both protect the ego physically and mentally as they will not hurt themselves and they will not lose their job for punching the boss. Denial is where you reduce anxiety by refusing to see the unpleasant aspects of reality. An example of this would be when a student receives their grades and they are lower than they expected but then they tell themselves that the grades do not really matter, even if they are very important.…

When I was a little boy I was always one of the smart ones in class, but I was also the most outrageous one too; No matter what class it was or who was in it. When I was in high school, I was always getting in trouble, but if you spoke with my teachers or other students they would always say, “He’s a very bright and smart individual; he just loves to express himself, way too much.” When I had the opportunity to express myself, I always took advantage of it. I use to see myself as the heart of the class, because I made people laugh, girls smile, and I always looked like I was in a good mood. I flirted with any and every girl possible. Not that I wanted to date them, but because it made some feel as if they were appreciated; even though they really didn’t do anything appreciable. People loved to be around me, even those I never met before, but by just speaking to. Most students’, thought while we are in high school it is a time to impress others, but it is actually the opposite.…

The most challenging obstacle I ever faced was life. Life is difficult and comes with a variety of problems. Facing defeat can sometimes be challenging. We are not all gifted with what society thinks its right. Today I can divide my greatest obstacle in to three parts, which are race, disease, and personality. This three problems have shaped my challenge into something that most people are not welly or fully capable of living with it. Today I can fully acknowledge that they have shaped my life and make me the man I am today.…

My uncle Ivan was very influential to me when I was growing up. In my house, I currently live with my mother, father, brother, aunt and three cousins. When my uncle was alive he lived downstairs from me. I could go to my uncle for anything, but my uncle’s physical presence was taken from me and I was only left with his spiritual presence. When my uncle passed away I was emotionally distraught. When my uncle passed away I was able to show strength. I knew I couldn’t act as if life was over due to this devastating loss because it would make my cousins feel hopeless. I had to act with strength…
