I have recently read the article Americans Get an ‘F’ in Religion by Cathy Lynn Grossman and the message that it is trying to give out to the reader is quite simple. The article is basically saying that people in America are quite ignorant of world religions. According to the text, not knowing about religions is treacherous. “Americans' deep ignorance of world religions — their own, their neighbors' or the combatants in Iraq, Darfur or Kashmir — is dangerous” said by Stephen Prothero, chairman of the religion department at Boston University. Cathy Lynn Grossman wrote this article in order to get Americans to realize this. The goal is to encourage the people of America to at least learn some basics of religions and what separates each from others. "Religions aren't all saying the same thing. That's presumptuous and wrong. They start with different problems, solve the problems in different ways, and they have different goals." said by Prothero. The article may have been written in the year 2006 or 2007, when President Bush was in office because it reference that activities in Iraq were still happening. This correlates on why…

“Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful,” (Seneca). Religion throughout the times has existed for people to possess a sense of purpose and the urge to seek impossible answers. Religion is not challenged by its adherents for God’s will remains absolute. For this reason, throughout history, many totalitarian governments have regulated what their subjects had the right to believe in. Anything that is believed to be higher than themselves proved possibly dangerous to their supremacy; so throughout history, religion has been an absolute tool used in their favor. In fact, this notion effortlessly applies to both novels, Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) and 1984 (George Orwell). Both pieces…

Theoretical approaches in general help us understand the concepts of religion that both our society has created and societies before ours. Two theoretical approaches to “religion” that would help understand ancient cultures would be Archaeology and History. Archaeologist would look closely at artifacts and past civilizations to understand the way they practice or believed in religion. Where as Historians would examine the language that was spoke, which would then correlate to the stories being told and the texts that came from a specific culture, traditions and decrees. Many may say that the archaeological approach to understanding religion has more evidence since the way these individuals look at religion have tangible objects opposed to the…

ESSAY TOPIC The United States of America was religiously diverse at its founding. Its population included numerous Protestant groups, small Catholic and Jewish populations, those who practiced traditional Native American religions as well as those who practiced African religions. The United States has become even more religiously diverse, yet Christianity has remained the majority faith tradition since the country’s beginnings. Today, some Americans assert that the country was founded as a “Christian nation” while others contend that statement is a myth. Using the Constitution and writings of the Founders, research and evaluate the claim that the United States was founded as a “Christian nation.” Include a discussion of the current implications for religious freedom for all people in a democratic country in which the majority rules in elections and ballot initiatives. small part of this complex phenomenon we call religion (Roberts, 1990). Sociology focuses on the social dimension of religion and on those aspects of religion affecting social behaviour (Roberts, 1990). Like the developmental psychologist who studies the child to discover the stages of personality development in all children, sociologist will be looking for the common patterns, the general rules, rather than for a unique characteristics of each religion, and looking at unique characteristics, it is to find how those characteristics affect behaviour in special ways (Roberts, 1990).…
The term “religiosity” was used by social scientists in order to indicate the extent, commitment, devotion and faithfulness of a person’s participation and practice of his or her religion (Gay and Lynxwiler, 2013). According to Ayenibiowo and Ayeni (2013), religiosity, in its narrowest sense, deals more with how religious an individual is and less with how religious an individual in terms of ritual, symbols and doctrines. On the other hand, religiosity, in its broadest sense, is a multifaceted construct pertaining to various religious activities, devotions and beliefs.…
Each of the generations mentioned above has different views and attitudes on religious matters; with the younger generations being said to be less religious than the elder ones. Several researches have been carried out to try and obtain facts on the role of religion among the various generations present in America. Recent research has shown that America is slowly becoming less and less religious as years go by. Research by the Pew forum has shown that fewer young subscribe to any particular faith (Poll, 2010).…
It can easily be debated whether or not religious motivation was the sole reason for the Europeans’ race to conquer the “unexplored” lands of North America. Regardless, faith and the guiding institution that housed it was without a doubt an essential factor in the Europeans’ deliberate migration westward. Not surprisingly, the theological motivation observable during this period of history did not fade – rather, it continued to validate the mostly problematic actions of new Americans from there on out. In countless ways, the United States has drawn on these theological roots in order to interpret its own history as upholding the nation’s founding ideals such as freedom, equality, and liberty.…
The three statements included: “Prayer is an important part of my daily life, We will all be called before God at the Judgment Day to answer for our sins, and I never doubt the existence of God.” (Pew Research Center Publications, 2007) In past years, eight out of ten Americans agreed with these three statements and the agreement of these three statements between the generations rose dramatically during the 1990’s. Then , the majority of Americans believed that religion and personal beliefs were extremely important and a vast majority belonged to a religious affiliation. However, the percentage of generational agreement has started to fall within recent years as the new generations start to come…
