The colonists figured out that african slaves were better than european slaves. African americans had been exposed to european diseases and built up an immunity to the diseases. They also had experience in farming so they could easily be taught work. They were less likely to escape because they didn't know the lay of the land. They called it the atlantic slave trade when it first started in the 1500’s they started transporting african slaves from africa to the americas. By the 1600’s they had transported 300,000 african slaves to the americas. Atlantic slave trade began to grow as a massive enterprise by the 1700’s they had transported 1.3 million slaves. If Europeans didn't have hard working african slaves some colonies like the ones on haiti and barbados may not have survived and many more. Slaves were put to work in many places such as mines, fields, or as domestic servants.The slaves were treated badly they were overworked and not well taken care of. It was more convenient to slave owners to buy a new slave every 3 to 10 years rather than give their slaves proper shelter and food.
