As slavery came to end at the end of the Civil War the South still had issues with letting it go. Slaves, at the time in 1865, were still treated like trash, abused, neglected, and disrespected by the whites that believed they still had their hands on them. The whites at that time rationalized their actions by saying their economy would falter. They wouldn’t have the hands to work crops therefor value of cotton, tobacco, rice, or any other crop would go down taking the economy with it. They weren’t completely treated with respect but it was much better then the South’s renegade. “They made a monthly wage of $10 with a $3 deduct for uniforms-the white men didn’t have this and they got $13”(African Americans In The Civil War). Ranks were also separated as the blacks got segregated once again. Really all in all the North wasn’t as bad as the south and actually towards the end held much more respect for the African Americans than they once had. In the Confederate side however there were only about a few ten thousands, on top of that many were forced to fight by their masters or at least come along in case the master had died. They definitely didn’t have any proper training or uniforms for the most part. They, even when they were fighting to ensure the south stayed the same, had really cruel people controlling them. It was the complete opposite of the north treatment towards the blacks. They usually ended in the front lines dieing first or in the back picking everyone injured or dead off the battlefield. For the north it provided more free manpower and labor forces to help as they made their way south ward. They were the eyes and ears of the operation and helped in any way possible. For the south they to were assets, although many were forced, they also helped the movement as spies and the mules of the hard labor. They also provided more man power and if things came to the worst they were the person to go home and tell everyone.
