In a liberal society, tendencies like this can cause challenges to social unity and the protection of rights and freedoms. This quote in section 12 of the Charter clearly states ideas about the treatment of others, ‘Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.’ Tribalism sometimes leads to groups treating others ruthlessly if their opinions or religions do not align with theirs, which clearly conflicts with the ideas in the Charter that state the fundamental freedoms.
