The Roles And Responsibilities Of A Tea
The roles and responsibilities of a teacher
There are many roles and responsibilities of a teacher and these are dependent on what is required of the teacher’s job. In this essay, I will make reference to the broader roles and responsibilities of a teacher, as well as some specific roles and responsibilities e.g. Identifying needs, and Preparation and Planning.
The broader roles of a teacher were stated in the work of Skinner (2010) who further defined the roles of a teacher as:
Structuring knowledge for students
Presenting, explaining, demonstrating, modelling
Checking understanding as the lesson proceeds
Motivating, controlling
Encouraging appropriate participation and critical reception
Maintaining strong direction of the course of learning.
In addition to the above roles, it is the responsibility of a teacher to be familiar with the variety of legislations, regulatory requirements, organisation’s policies and procedures, and codes of practice that are linked with the teacher’s role. It is also the teacher’s responsibility to ensure that every student has a safe and healthy environment in which to learn or work (City and Guilds, n.d).
There are some specific roles teachers have, and these usually fall within the teaching/training cycle (City and Guilds, n.d). This cycle can start at any point and it generally covers five stages. They are:
Identifying needs
Preparation and Planning
Delivery
Assessment
Evaluation
In this essay, I will further explore (1) Identifying needs and (2) Preparation and Planning.
(1) Identifying needs: It is the responsibility of a teacher to identify the needs of his/her students so that the teacher can design the course to reflect personal learning needs and also motivate them. The range of student needs can be social, physical, intellectual, cultural and emotional, and teachers have a responsibility to monitor and evaluate their practice to ensure the student needs are met (City and Guilds, n.d)
Ryan and Deci (2008, p.1) in their research paper on self-determination theory stated “...how the processes and structures of rewards, directives, feedback, praise, positive regard and other change-related factors enhance or diminish self-motivation and outcome”. It is the responsibility of teachers to motivate their students by using different strategies such as commending or praising the efforts of their students and/or rewarding their efforts through certificates.
(2) Preparation and Planning: It is the responsibility of a teacher to plan and prepare teaching and learning resources and activities. The teacher should always put into consideration the needs of his/her students and plan the lesson well, ensuring the needs of all the students are met and the requirements of the syllabus are also covered (City and Guilds, n.d).
In conclusion, it is impossible to give a rigid overview of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher as they constantly change. Although, there are some roles and responsibilities that are common to all teachers throughout the education system, some of which have been noted here. It is through these roles and responsibilities a teacher inspires, understands, motivates, engages, supports, forms relationships, trains, coaches, perseveres, and above all is constantly learning and shaping the future by playing a major part in the fulfilment of many lives (Leibling and Prior, 2005).
