The Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was the period of the ancient Roman society. Their form of government was Roman Republic. The Roman civilization was located around the Mediterranean in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The first emperor of Rome was Augustus. He established a strong military. There were two different societies in the Roman Empire, the East and the West. The Eastern people spoke Latin, and the Western people spoke Greek. Domitian was the third and last emperor of the Flavian dynasty. He was born on October 24, 51 AD. He surrounded himself with spies and informers, and put to death the noblest men of his time. Domitian was notorious for his cruelty. He tortured many people. He was assassinated on September 18, 96 AD. With the murder of Domitian there was no member of the Flavian house, much less one form the Julio-Claudian, left to succeed him. For once there was no ambitious general at the gates, and the senate could execute its constitutional authority. Constantine was Roman Emperor from 306 to 337. Constantine is best known for being the first Christian Roman Emperor. He established the great Constantinople. It was situated so it could control trade between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. This meant it practically controlled global trade. This city later becomes Istanbul of Turkey. He helped Christians by favoring them, giving lots of money to the church, and rebuilding the churches that were lost in the great persecution. Constantine died in 22 May, 337 at Nicomedia. At Constantine's death at Nicomedia in AD 337, three sons and two of his nephews were destined by the late emperor to succeed him. Though two of those sons were absent from Nicomedia, they became in the emperors. They divided the empire between the three of them. Rome fell because a combination of such factors as Christianity, decadence, leads, monetary trouble, and military problems caused the Fall of Rome. Later after that, The Rise of Islam began.

The Roman Empire was ruled by various leaders. However, most of these leaders were dictators and tribal. In a line of the ruling, you may find a time when Rome was ruled by people of the same family. For instance, a son succeeded the father, and the grandson succeeded the son. For this reason, it clear that democracy was changed and that some people were selfish and didn’t let others lead. However, the Julio-Claudian Empire refers to the first five leaders who ruled Rome. They include Tiberius, Claudius, Augustus, Nero, and Caligula. Also, the Julio-Claudian Empire may refer to the family of which the five empires belonged. The Romans overthrew the Etruscans in 509 B.C.E. The Etruscans had ruled over the Romans for hundreds of years. Once free, the Romans established a republic, a government in which citizens elected representatives to rule on their behalf. The highest positions in the government were held by two consuls who ruled the Roman republic. A senate composed of Patricians elected these consuls and at this time, lower-class citizens, or plebeians, had virtually no say in the government. Both men and women were citizens in the Roman Republic, but only men could vote. Under certain circumstances, the senate and the consuls could appoint a temporary dictator to rule for a limited time until the crisis was resolved. One of the innovations of the Roman Republic was the notion of equality under the law. In 449 B.C.E., government leaders carved some of Rome 's most important laws into 12 great tablets. During the last three centuries of the republic, Rome experienced a long series of civil wars, economic as well as political issues, and civil crisis caused by the dictatorship of Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s death, another civil war broke out destroying what was left of the Roman republic. Caesar’s adopted son, Octavian, joined forces with a general named Mark Antony and a politician named Lepidus. They took control of Rome for ten years as the Second triumvirate. The alliance ended in violence and jealousy. Octavian forced Lepidus to retire and then became rivals with Mark Antony. Octavian believed Mark Antony was plotting to rule Rome from Egypt,…

The fall of Rome was caused by many different internal and external reasons. One internal reason the Roman Empire fell was because of the weakening economy and inflation. In the text it says “Desperate for revenue, the government raised taxes, It also started minting coins that contained less and less silver.” By doing this the government made a huge mistake. Raising taxes made the civilians angry that they had to pay more, and minting coins with less silver caused inflation because they didn’t have enough metal to back it. This caused Rome to fall because the gap between the rich and poor grew even larger because of these mistakes. An external reason that Rome fell is that The Huns lead by Attilla started to attack the Empire. In the book it states“With 100,000 soldiers, Atilla terrorized both halves of the Empire. In the East, his armies attacked and plundered 70 cities.” The Huns along with the Germanic invasions hurt the Empire very badly and was one of the main factors it fell. These internal and external factors are why The Roman Empire fell the way it did.…

Another reason that Rome fell was because of its government. Through the years, its leaders became corrupt. Rome went from a republic to an emperor-rules-all system. Political changes were dominated by the changes in location of important cities, and the powers of leaders. The Emperor in this period, started out as to be the protector of Rome, not acting like a dictator, but rather a guide. The senate was put in place, and used to make most executive decisions. This changed, however, when emperor Diocletian took the throne. He took on the title “dominus et dues”, translating from latin to: lord and god. He started the transition from a republic, to the absolute monarchy that would soon come to be. During the 6th century, the senate lost all of its power. During Emperor…
