There are four main types of parenting styles: authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and uninvolved. Many of these parenting styles cause self-esteem, social, and academic related issues in children. Parents often do not have the knowledge that the way they parent has an effect on their children, nor do they truly know how to be a parent. Due to this fact, a parenting or child care class should be required course for high school graduation. Two very different parenting styles are used in the stories, “The Rules of the Game” and “The Daughter of Invention”. In “The Rules of the Game”, the mother lives vicariously through her daughter. She is prideful of her child’s accomplishments and rewards her daughter greatly when she succeeds. The mother and daughter learn to understand each other in the end and follow “the rules of the
Uninvolved parenting can cause the child to develop a low self-esteem and have little confidence(Source F). The children can also end up hating themselves or others, hiding their feelings, avoiding feelings; being withdrawn, disrespectful, distrustful; and perform poorly on their own(Source F). Another way a parent can cause the child to not perform well on their own is being a “helicopter mom”. Helicopter parenting is when the parent “hovers” over their children and overly monitor their children's social lives and activities(Source C). This can cause the children to “lack maturity, self-reliance, self-esteem, and good old-fashioned gumption”(Source C). The median to both of these types of parenting is authoritative parenting. Authoritative parents set rule and expect their children to follow the(Source D). They reward their children for good behavior and have consequences when the children exhibit bad behavior(Source D).
